Cub with a clutch problem

Hello folks, I need some help. I just bought a decent 1948 Cub. It runs fine, and looks ok, but it needs a clutch adjustment real bad. I really don"t know how to do it. Even at an idle, it grinds bad when going into gear, and no free play. I sure could use some help.
Thanks so much
Tom

Your adjustment is in that hole on the bottom of bellhousing if your hand is small enough. If I can ever get my hand in one, I will write about it. Just like adjusting in car I guess.

Tom, not real sure, but I had a 39 A that had what sounds as you have on your hands. Didn't have any play either... had to put new clutch and throwout in it... not a lot of work, but time consuming. Hope you don't have to go to all that work.

If and when you play with the adjuster and it still makes the same sound the presure plate is weak.

The springs are weak not allowing the clutch to fully disengauge.

I have the same problem with my 55 but my adjustment is in a differnt location.

I've been dealing with the same problem the last few days. I split my '49 to put in a new rear main seal and pilot bushing. When I got er back together, the clutch wouldn't disengage. I got some great advice at farmallcub.com. Look in the forum there, in the last couple of days, and you can get some great advice. Most of your adjustments can be done through the hole in the belly, given a set of right angle screw drivers and some patience.
UNLESS...
You have to replace some parts, then you are looking at split. Not really that big of a job on those little tractors, just tedious, only takes a couple hours.

Good luck.

Ben
