battery ignition or magneto

My 44 H' has a battery (6V) and what I think is a distributor. But when I look at pictures (of other H's), the box on top of the distributor(so I think) is round with battery ignition, yet the box on mine is square. Any ideas? I can post a picture, but don't know if it will work. I will try.

When you have a distributor you will have an auto type coil with battery voltage being fed to it from an ignition switch. Your mag creates its own voltage when the magnets pass by the coil. Never connect battery voltage to it. Hal

First you need an Operator's manual -- differences in setting timing, etc are explained there, although they are very similar. Main difference is the point gap, 0.013 on the mag, 0.020 on the distrubuter. Starter is the same. Wiring due to the mag is slightly different. Diagrams are in the manual.

A tractor with a mag can, and many do, have a battery. The most common setup is a regular generator and battery system, with a starter. It may or may not have lights. The ignition in those cases is just it's own little system, completely isolated from the rest of the elctricity on the tractor. There was also a Bosch system with it's own generator for just lights, no starter.
