424 charging issue

Went out and started the tractor yesterday, and the little AMP light came on. Battery voltage with the tractor running is 12.4, but I'm having problems checking my generator output.

When I put my negative meter lead on the negative battery terminal, and touch the positive meter lead to either of the two poles on the generator, I get 0. When I stick the negative meter lead on the positive battery terminal, and the positive meter lead on either of the generator posts, I get -12.4

Where do I need to check next, or what should I be looking for? Thanks!

when you put the negative on the battery pos and the pos on the generator all you are doing is getting the battery voltage. It may say -12.4 since you are reversed. You need to check the voltage coming off of the terminal of the generator that goes to the bat. Put pos on that pole and ground it on the chassis somewhere. That will tell you how much your generator is putting out.

Can you tell me which terminal on the generator is supposed to go to the battery? I checked both of them with an ohm meter, and they both go to the negative battery post, but neither seem to go to the positive.

If you can get to your regulator, --Assuming a negative ground system--- clip your meter's negative lead to the negative batt. terminal or ground & check for battery voltage at the "BAT" terminal. If this is 12.4 or thereabouts, with engine running, short the "F" terminal on the generator or regulator to ground. If voltage picks up to 13 volts or more, the regulator is at fault. If voltage doesn't improve, I'd suspect worn generator brushes or other generator problems.

The ARM. terminal on the generator should be connected to the GEN. terminal on the regulator. The "F" terminal on the generator should be connected to the "F" or FLD terminal on the regulator. If you suspect wiring troubles, use 2 jumper wires to by-pass the regular wiring from gen. to regulator.
