I have a 2424 I/H tractor S# 04752. I have a manual from Case/IH but the wiring diagram shows a generator and the tractor I have has an 3 wire alternator and a 4 wire regultor ( book shows 3 wire). the wiring is burned and melted. I am trying to rewire it but have not been able to find any good wiring diagrams for this tractor. The book does not show the correct wiring for this type of tractor and Case cannot help. Can anyone help me?

The problem with your wiring diagrams is that the 2424 originally came with a generator not a alternator. If you have a alternator it was converted over to at some point in time so the wiring diagrams in the manuals will not match whats on the tractor. There are several diagrams/instructions around that show you how to convert from generator to alternator on this site. Recently rewired a British built 364 dsl(bd-154 engine) that like yours all the wiring was melted. We ended up removing all the wiring and basically starting over. I used a Delco 10si type alternator which greatly simplified wiring the charging circuit.
Is you 4242 gas or diesel?

Jerry, were NOT mixing apples n oranges here are we????? ???? When you say 3 wire alternator Im thinking you mean like a GM 10 SI buttttt t when you talk of 3 n 4 wire regulators DO YOU MEAN THE OLD 3 OR 4 TERMINAL VOLTAGE REGULATOR OR A SOLILD STATE ALTERNATOR VOLTAGE REGULATOR????? ????? ????? ?

If you use an alternator YOU DO NOTTTTT TT USE THE OLD VOLTAGE REGULATOR. The GM 10 SI 3 wire is internally regulated while some other alternators use an external alternator type of Voltage Regulator again, they DO NOT use the old generator voltage regulator...

Jim or Bob M's diagreams show hot to wire an alternator if its the 3 wire 10 SI but even if its a solid state external alternator voltage regulator they are not hard to wire

Figure out what you have n we may be able to help

With all due respect Jim, If he by chance happens to have an older 10DN delco alternator, it will be a three wire alternator with a FOUR wire external regulator. If he wires a 10DN per your diagram the field will have 12 volts on it all the time and the alt will charge at max output all the time.

A three wire alternator (Delco 10SI typical) will never need an external regulator. The one mounted that you mention should be put on the shelf.
Connections should be very similar to the one shown here. The diode shown just below the alternator should be a 3 amp or more, and have its band end to the alternator #1 terminal. JimN
