Coming out of the overflow tube is this stuff that is medium gray in color and the consistency of paint.

Any ideas what is going on?

If overflow of radiator, it is a sign of combustion gasses or engine oil, getting into the coolant.
From head gaskets, cracked head/s, pinholes in sleeves, and broken oil cooler tubes, A comprehensive testing procedure is needed.
Is there water in the oil?
Smell the coolant
What is the coolant contaminated with? Let it stand in a mayo jar to see if it separates.
Have a test (or use a test kit) to check the coolant for specific materials.
Pressure check the system pan on, and if dropping, pan off.
There will be other specific ideas coming along.

There is no water in the oil. I collected a jar of the stuff coming out of the overflow and have it setting. I haven't noticed any separation yet.

Smell can be pretty defining. Coolant is sweet smelling, oil/combustion products smell sour and petroleum like. If it is loosing coolant. I would remove the oil cooler and test it under pressure (75psi on the oil side of it) to see if air leaks into the water side. (I think it can be a pretty common problem, and cheap to fix!!) JimN

Your engine oil cooler is leaking oil in the water. They run around $175.00 . Been there on my 1466 and 1486. You will have to flush out your radiator and motor. I have run a lot of water thru one to get it all out. Also you will have to change your coolant filter. I took my filter off several times and flushed it out and later when the water finley ran clean, put new antifreeze and a new filter
