I have a late 50's Cub. It has 2 problems. 1) When you push the clutch all of the way in, it grinds (you can feel it through the pedal and you can hear it!), when you push it 3/4's of the way in you can shift and it doesn't grind.
2) It cranks, It runs for a little while and then quits. I have had this happen with Light load (trying to move the tractor)and at idle. Plus, Coil gets HOT! .

JR, you throwout bearing is worn out. It is made out of graphite and when the leading edge wears down the bearing carrier comes in contact with the clutch fingers. As far as you stalling, remove the brass plug on the bowl of the carberator to see if you have good flow of gas. If the coil is bad it could be dropping the spark when it heats up. Bates Corp is now making a replacement TO bearing with a sealed rollar bearing. I will be replacing mine soon since I have the same clutch noise.
