What are you using to sand Blast with? I got this cheap siphon thing from Northern Tool and it is a piece of crap. Is there a good budget way to sand blast that will work with a standard air compesor?

About 15 years ago I took a 100 pound propane tank put a 2"coupling in the top for easy filling.Put a 3/4" ball valve in the bottom for regulating the sand flow a 3/4" T under that with a hose going up,pressurizing the top of the pot and the blasting hose going out the other side of the T . I then went a bought 20' of 1/2" sand blast hose (now on my 3rd lenght of that)use a piece of 1/4"pipe for a tip and it works very fast . I use a 125 CFM portable compressor with it and have put tons of sand through that thing over the years. At the time I built it I had $35 in fittings and supplies and $60 in sand blast hose.

About the same thing we used, but it was a bit stouter tank, 1/4" wall. Watch your pressure on that tank over time. My brother uses a clemco 600lb tank with diesel 200cfm compressor. I use a small craftsman 80lb siphon with a 23 cfm Puma compressor and it works fine for what i need.

I recently bought 70 lb bags of silica at the local lumberyard for around $4 per bag. I use it in a little siphon blaster on individual parts and it works pretty well. It's kind of slow, but definitely easier than hauling parts to someone else to blast. Gloves, mask, goggles and a face shield are necessities. You will want to wear the safety equipment regardless of what media you use, as there will be fine particles flying around, and I don't imagine having slag or whatever else in your lungs is going to be any better than the silica. I also would never consider blasting a complete tractor unless it was going to be completely disassembled afterwards. I've been around equipment and helped prep it for blasting. It doesn't matter how good of a job you do masking, that sand will get everywhere you don't want it - and be next to impossible to get out.

I'm going through the same process. I got a little siphon feed Sears sandblaster a few years ago; it works, just slow. But I can't emphasize enough that you research for yourself the dangers of silicosis. It has killed lots of people. Even though it is still common to see welding shops, etc, sandblasting with sand and no respirator. The only kind of respirator that is NIOSH approved is an air-supplied type; they have a air hose that runs outside or to a known clean air supply, away from the silica dust. No filter type respirator (that I've seen) is adequate. I would advise you to try to find some of the Black Beauty or Black Diamond blasting media. The closest I could find it is an hour away; after 8 phone calls, an industrial welding supply shop finally told me of a place to find it. It is $7/100 lbs here. For more information, look up the MSDS sheets for Black Beauty and silica sand on the internet.

The siphon thing can be made to work if you don't have much blasting to do. Have someone hold the pick up tube almost flat across the surface of the sand. It will pick up much better that way than just sticking it down in a bucket of sand. It needs to pick up more air than what it can pick up from down in the bucket. My wife held the pick-up while I blasted. It went much faster that way.

I have managed to get by with mine, but would like a blast cabinet. My 6-1/2 HP (or at least that's what it say's it is, yeah right!) compressor just won't put out the CFM's you need to really do blasting.

i rent a compressor that you pull behind a truck, and use my nieghbors blaster. holds about two bags of sand. runs at about 125 psi. lots of pressure. really blasts it off.

Kelly,

I used a pressure sand plaster from Harbor Freight, I think it was about $55.00 it works pretty good for what it is. I used two different size of silica sand from the local masonry suppler about $5.00 for a 100lb bag. Size 30-course for the cast parts and size 60-fine for the sheetmetal. You should use a very good respirator mask, one with filters on it. Not a cheap dust mask, you can get very sick from breathing silica sand dust. Nice tractor and website.

I use the black slag media in my pressure blaster. Its real agressive and cheap $5 a 100 # bag. They dont sell sand anymore for health reasons. siphon blasters dont work I found that out like you did. You can probably rent a good pressure blaster or get a good used one.

What sort of health reasons? I bought 2 100 bags of white sand from Norther Tool for $3.00 each.
I saw that they had some different types of blasters there. 2 of them had a air hose going to a spliter one end went to the top of the tank and the other went to the bottom. At the bottom it conected to a hose that had a porcalin tip that had a piece that cut off the sand and air. they want $299 for that one.

you can get siliconosis from using sand. The black slag is really more aggressive and you can get it in different sizes for abrasion.
