The DT-361 in my 1206 is very tired at 8000 hrs. Love this old tractor, but could use more power when chopping corn. Does anybody here know if I can replace my eng. with the eng. from more powerful IH. One guy claimed a DT-466 would bolt right up, can this be true.

Well then, I'll be the oddball. Had a neighbor that put a 915 motor in an 06 with a 1566 radiator and an 856 shifting column. He kept the bolster steering. I guess that makes it the world's finest tractor. The problem I have with 361-407 down here is that when you go into a CaseIH dealership for an engine part they look at you like you have two heads. The 414-436-466 is much easier to get parts for as a farming tractor.

Good reason for this, the 414, 436 and 466 were a lot more troublesome, thus the parts people are more familiar with them. Just surprise you the number of 06 and 56 series tractors that have never had the valve cover or oil pan off.

I have seen many that have gone over 18000 hrs with good maintance my owen has ove 8700 hours on it and still run fine and will run all week plowen on only two qts. of oil. One of these day i just might take the valve cove off just to adjust the valves probably needs it. And as far as parts go we don't have a problem here with them the dealer here has most on stock.

If the old girl is getting tired then give it a ovehaul , but when ya do this it must be done with great care as this is not and engine that can just be throwen togeather as it's age has made some core shifts in the block and it is wise to have it bored .010 and install the over size sleeves and if i was doing it i would take it to someone that can set up off the mains on a big boreing bar that way you get all the sleeves in line and a good line bore also don't hurt as for the power well i don't think that after a good breakin that 160 to 170 is not out of the question and a good pyrometer to watch the temp. And if this is not enough then go find a good old 1066 and set it like i have a buddy's set we have no problem choppen corn in 4th low with the stick ahead and my old 806 with no charger on it will run the same chopper in 2nd low stick ahead.

You might try searching back through the forum archives. I think I remember this coming up awhile ago, someone asked about putting a 466 in a 1256. If I remember correctly, it almost sounded like the whole front half of the tractor needed to be modified/replaced. Personally, I would probably keep the 361, You'll probably notice an increase in power with a freshly overhauled engine, if you still want more power, have the pump turned up.

A young man who frequents the IH Red Power Magazine Forum pulled His turned-up 1206 at the RPRU a month ago.... His PTO clutch was slipping at 175 HP but the speed & way He pulled the pulling sled it was estimated He was make 400 HP with a DT-361..... Yeah... Keep the 361... and turn the pump up just a little!

A 407 from the 56 series bolt right in place. I agree that quite a bit of work is needed to put a DT466 in a 1206.

Mark,
The frame rails are different on the 06-56 and 66-86 series. It would take some modification to make it fit. I'd stick with the 361.

Okay guys, you didn't have to pry too hard to talk me into an overhaul on my 361. I like these older series engines anyway. They seem to have more power at lower rpm's then some of the later engines. Also, I guess I should have told more of the story on this tractor. At about 4000hrs. I had the inj. pump rebuilt& and set to 150 horse on the dyno. It made a real horse out of it,but also a lot of heat. So we installed a beer keg water injection system, problem was solved. It took 30degrees off water temp. and added 10 hp on the dyno. I guess what I'm saying is it easy to forget the power an engine had because it loses it so slowly thru normal wear. Thank for the advice.
