Goofy Looking Magneto..For Farmall H or ?

I acquired a magneto at a swap meet a couple of years ago. The man said it was hot. Now that I need it, I pulled it out and started scratching my head.

The magneto off of my 1942 Farmall H is mounted vertical to the mounting plate it is attached to. This one is rotated 30 or so degrees. If I mounted it on my H, it would not be upright like we are all used to. It would lean out, away from the tractor. What is this magneto for? If it is not for an H, does anybody need it? I will not be able to use it. Let me know what it is for so I can list it in the classifieds.

Thanks,

Scott

The magneto is used on IY69 Continental engines that IH used on some balers and small combines. It is the same as used on the letter series tractors except for the mounting flange and impulse coupling.. It would bolt up to the H but the coil cover would be away from the block and also the lag angle on the impulse is such that the timing would be slow. Just restorewd one of these engines and that is the type mag it has.

I don't recognize what you have from the description. Is it an IH magneto? The mag for an H is a model H4 and there should be an H4 stamped on it. It would have an IH logo or the older style IHC logo somewhere on it too. There were some aftermarket mags made by Fairbanks-Morse & maybe others that would work also, maybe it's one of those. Any chance of posting a picture?

It is the exact same as a Farmall H Magneto. The mounting plate of the mag that bolts to the drive coupling is rotated about thirty degrees. I can snap a photo of it but will have no place to put the photo. I could e-mail it to you. It looks the exact same as a Farmall H mag. If I bolted it on, the unit would not sit upright like the regular mag does. It would hang out from the tractor.

I thought maybe I could unbolt the base from the mag but it looks like that is the only way it would go. Maybe it fits a special tractor that needed it rotated to fit.

You've got me, Scott. I can't remember seeing that kind of setup.
Maybe somebody else will recognise it.

It may be a magneto from an H-mounted Cotton Picker. We had a couple of them up until I was about 12 and I seem to remember there being some "specialized" parts on the tractors to make room for the basket, controls and other stuff.
There is another possibility. I-H engines were used in an enormous number of applications-industrial and otherwise-you could have the right mag, from another application aside from a tractor. Or, you could just have something really, really, wierd.
