I am hoping to draw on the experience on this board.
I have a restored Farmall 300.Excellent.
My problem is in the aging process (Mine) and battling arthritus I am finding it increasingly hard to get on and off the tractor. I am concerned about slipping at some time and doing some real damage. Plus it is so tall I do have to be careful driving it into the shop where it lives between lawn cuttings. Also the narrow front wheel design is a concern to me and I would prefer to go to tractor with wide set front wheels. I need a tractor to do the work around here but want to get one easier to use. I need to pull a 6 foot mower; PTO;hydraulics and a 3 point hitch.
This is the only tractor I have ever had.
What would you recommend as a replacement tractor to meet my needs?
Thanks in advance for any suggestions.
Jim

If you are not dead set on red then take a look at the D seiers Allis like a D14 or D17. About the same age and priced right usually. They are both row crop and utility so easy to get on. May have to buy a 3 point conversion for one though. They are $400 or less. When my neighbor had a leg amputated he swithed to a D15 and was able to use that tractor for many years.

You are going to miss the turning ability of that narrow front.

Personally, I do not believe the narrow front is any more dangerous than a wide front, but that's an argument that's been done on this board a number of times.

I would also like to second that narrow fronts are not any too dangerous- just take it slow and use your head, wide fronts really don't do a lot more for you. We live in hill country too, and Grandpa used narrow fronts for everything. We still use the same tractors today, without a problem. But if the wide front is to pacify the wife, you haven't got much choice!

I agree about the narrow front not being as dangerous as people think. We've used them for years here in our hill country. It's not the front end but what is between the operator's ears that makes a tractor dangerous. I've noticed that many people who condemn narrow fronts have never had any experience with them. And I know about the loader issue; but we used a narrow front Farmall M for cleaning a heifer barn for years (1946-1990) and also used it for loading gravel out of the creek for farm roads. Again, common sense, etc.

I have heard that same comment for years. The change over from the narrow to wide was sort of a concession for my wife who has always been afraid of something happening. My main concern is getting on and off the tall 300 easier.

How about an axle-mounted step (or two)? I've seen that on several older tractors.

I mount my F14 (not nearly as tall, I know) from the rear, one step on the loop drawbar, one on the axle trumpet, and viola! 'course, that don't work so well with a 2-or-3 point hitch.

My brother put a step on the frame of his JD-620, makes it a lot easier to get on, and also to hoist fuel cans up.

Hate to say it, but your best bet would be one of the newer utility tractors. Moving into the 80's would give you lots of standard features: easy to get on and off, live PTO and hydralics, 3-point hitch, lots of power in a small package, etc.

If you would like to stay with the older equipment and still have the versatility of a Farmall, go with a 300 or 350 utility. I would NOT recommend a standard tractor as they did not come with 3-point and one cannot easily be added. Also they are not the easiest to move around in tighter spaces.

All in all, a utility tractor would be a good bet.

Steven

Jim: Most people do not get a chance to put a heavy load on a tractor for a long enough time to get a complete warm up. So the lower temps may not give good results like a compression test. If it was running on a belt or PTO heavy load, temp check would be better. Interesting idea tho. G.

maybe you could trade for a 300 utility but they did not have 3 point hitch. how about a 340 utility?

Hey, one old guy to another, I've owened better than 20 tractors in my time including a Farmall 350, which would be just like your 300. The easiest to mount and most stable machine I have found for about the same value and power of what you want to replace is the Massey Fergeson 35 or 135. They my be a little less powerful but will handle the 6'mower with no problem. Just make sure you get one with the 2 stage clutch and power steering. You'll love it!

If you would realy like to keep the 300.....
I am restoring a 1951 FARMALL M ....I lost my left leg in Dec. of '99...I have designed a flat top roof off a newer Ford to fit my M .It will clamp to the axel housings like the drawbar ( a 2"grove front and back side of housing..... I am making the upright supports out of 2" aquare tubing, with 1/4" wall....They will " Y " out to meat the roof supports on each side....In the right rear corner I am mounting a small 12 volt hoist (changing tractor to 12 volt any way)I will have a nylon web horness made for my butt and around my upper torso ...snap in the hook and up or down I go.....desperate people do desperate things..... .
