Felt rear main seal. Install dry or oil soaked?

I saw a couple posts in the archives about this, but none of them really gave me a good answer to my question; Should you install a new felt rear main seal (Farmall H) dry, presoaked in oil, or just coated with oil on the inside diameter? The engine is not freshly rebuilt. I'm just taking it out, replacing the seal, and reinstalling the engine. Any advice?

Now I know why so maney of the aluminum parts are no good the second time if you soak the felt with oil it swells then when you tighten on block that warps the aluminum often wondered why they warped so bad. A little oil when installing much better they will get all the oil they need after it runs some never had on leak.

Replace dry, press in tightly to the retainer contour (a big socket or water pipe the crank diameter works good), coat with lots of oil or assembly lube, but leave the ends dry and coat with red RTV, insert crank, then assemble the other half of the seal retainer.

When you say you cut some off do you mean in the length of the felt or the thickness of the felt?I just put one in my Super C and on the thickness it stuck up over the top of the groove maybe an 1/8 of an inch. But on length it was way to long and the instructions that came with it said it might be and just to cut off the ends.

I just cut off a little on the ends not the width. I still had to force it down over the crank and bolt it up.

I did my Faramall H and 300 I had to cut some off there was no way I could get it all in there. The felt seal came from a Felpro gasket set. No leaks at all.

I second that.

Do not cut off "just a little" because someone did not make it the right size. Don't ask why I know. (The seeping should tell) Force it in the best way you can. G.
