I have a Farmall 504, the problem seems to be that when using the hydraulics on a small disk with cylinder, it will raise it part the way then stop. I am considering changing the fluid and filter first before going further. First, does a 504 have a hydraulic fluid filter and where is it, and second what could be other reasons for this. Thanks for any help.

Edward, check your owners manual. The 504 will either have a 12 or 17 gpm hydraulic pump. The location given in the other replies is correct. The filter is different between the two pumps. My 504 utility has the oval filter with relief valve and the 12 gpm pump. Parts are available at your Case-IH dealer (filter is about $20).

Filter under plate on right side of clutch housing. Check for bend cylinder shalf or interference on disk lift.

504 has filter on side of clutch housing, right hand center, cover is a oval cast plate, get a new filter from CNH dealer, part 388084R93, it will have a gasket shaped to match outline, look at Hytran and make sure its not contaminated, should have a light maple syrup color, or just for safety sake put in 13 gal new, if this doesnt help try new hydraulic coupler tips first, these were notorious for erratic locking up.
