Just picked up a L306 for my A yesterday and got it mounted up. I have no owners manual and will have to get one but I have one question that can't wait till the manual gets here.

There is a twist in the belt, is this normal? There seems to be no way to install the belt without putting this twist into it. I would think that this would be very stresful on the belt.

Thanks,
Lance

I used and L 59 on a 140 for years. The belt has a twist on both sides and in more than one place. I think there is a 3/4 twist between the belt pulley sheave and the idler pulley on one side and a 1/4 twist in same location on other side, and also twists between the idlers and the mower center pulleys. Don't recall the details better than that, but you definitely need a manual. If you don't have the belt right, you will ruin it. If you have it right and you are using the mower once or twice a week, the belt should last 5 years. And the others below are correct, the belt needs to be really tight. I used to jack the idlers down with with a jack to get the belt good and tight. You can't get it tight enough just pushing down or even using a pry bar unless you have a helper.

no thats the way they run make sure the belt is super tite more belts are ruined by running too loose than to tight from a WOODS owner of 35 years

Right on! Actually, without looking, I'd say it is a double twist. I think all of the twist should be in the side returning to the drive pulley.

A lesson I won't forget...I ruined a new belt that started slipping and I kept mowing on the way back to the shop. It flopped over and broke its back...a $100 mistake. You can't get it too tight...the belt will take it.

Of course you don't have to buy from Woods, but you'll buy at least 3 of those cheaper belts in the same time...your call. The woods belts are strong enough to work reliably under the necessary tension. The NAPA belts aren't.

But make sure you get the right width belt. I think they are a B section, but may be C. A small belt will not hold up, and will roll over the first time you try it.

From another sad experience.

If you use a Woods belt, it will be the right size, and strong enough to stand the necessary extreme tension. They are made especially for mower use. Don't even think about trying to use a cheaper belt...they won't last any time at all.

If it doesn't have the weird twist, it isn't a Woods.

My problem was didn't have it tight enough. It flopped over and ran sideways...ruining it.

I never tried to buy a belt from Woods.

Mine all come from oilfield supply houses and seem to work well, but a pretwisted beld sounds good.

I suppose they would work on an IH belly mower with the right length.

You guys are great! I'm going tomarrow to get a manual ordered. I used a helper and a 6' pry bar to tension the belt, it is tight! I have all of the twist in the outfeed of the pully which seems right to me and it works good that way. I sharpened the blades and she cuts like a champ, mowed 3 acres in no time. Thanks for all of your help!
