Is Start-up Smoke Normal?

I have a Farmall M that was recently overhauled. The overhaul was 100% with pistons, rings, sleeves, new valves, new valve guides etc...

I have worked the tractor under various loads several times. I even pulled it hard enough to turn the exhaust manifold a light color. The inside of the exhaust pipe is white after running hard. Every time I start the tractor, It blows a puff of blue smoke. Is this normal? How long does it take to fully seat the piston rings? The engine does not burn oil. Any ideas?

cheg, were valve seals installed when the head was redone? if not , get some good automotive-type seals that fit the top of your guides.if it does have seals they may have been pulled up off the valve guides by the spring when the head was assembled.

Valve stem seals are not used on Hs and Ms. That would put additional wear on the valve stem and guide if they were not lubricated.

when you did trhe valves did you change the valve seats? usually after you turn it off and let it sit for a few mins it collects oil in the seats.

A puff of blue smoke on start up is usually caused by leaking valve guides. I had a GMC pickup that started puffing at start up after running hot when it had 12000 miles on it. When sold it had 250000 miles and was still puffing.

I'd let her smoke for some time before getting concerned. It takes some time for metal parts to wear-together. And remember, an M only spins up to 1490rpms or so. That's not really many rpms, so it may take a while for the rings to seat.
