For a couple of years now, I've been asking for help on my Super A, and more recently my A.

For the last 2 weeks, I've been telling you that it runs, but makes a "popping" sound. I cleaned the carb, I cleaned the points, and replaced the wires, cap, rotor and plugs. But it still didn't help. Last night the Farmall Gods came to me in a vision. They said "Brian, you've got the wires in the right order, but do you understand which direction the rotor turns ??" So today, I looked and guess what, I had it backwards. Put them the other way and BAMMMM !! She runs like she were brand new.

To add to this story. That popping sound was the exact same one my super A was making. I do beleive I may have completely disassembled it for all the wrong reasons.

Well that's my story.

Best Regards,
Stupid.

Once took the engine apart on my cub because it was froze-up. After I got it all apart I found the problem was only the fan pulley, a little WD-40 and all was well. I did find the engine was in great shape other than that. Great learning experience though. No sin in trying, only in never trying.

Yep,

I rebuilt a carb from a '79 Hurst Olds once after trying "everything else" - turns out it was a distributor cap that had worn in a hard to spot way...

Live and learn.

I once had a loud grinding noise towards the rear of my f150. Had to be the rear end, I thought, cause it came on so suddenly. Immediately went to the junk yard and bought a new rear end. $$$ the whole thing. New U bolts also. Swapped it all out in only 6 or 8 hours and buttoned it all up with the old U joints... you guessed it... same noise. New U joints and presto!
Now who's dumb?
good luck

Seems we all have stories like this....a few years ago I pulled the trans out of my pickup to replace clutch. Upon reassembly it would not start. After much cussing and discussing I found I had pinched the fuel pump wire in between the frame and cross member I removed in the process. Shorted and blew fuse. Easy to do and hard to find.

Took my truck to several automatic transmission "Specailists" asking why I was getting a banging sound when I took off fast or pulled a steep hill. The diagnosis was either "I don't know" or "something messed up in the reverse drum". Spent a week of nights putting in another tranny (had to build a different driveshaft) only to find out that I still had the same problem. Come to find out, the $2 spring had holds the starter drive gear away from the flywheel was broken. Yep - felt real stupid! That was about 12 years ago and my buddies that helped me swap trannys (then swap them back) haven't forgot it yet. I still don't know anything about automatic transmissions, but I'll never forget the sound of a starter gear sliding back into the flywheel!
Happens to the best of us,
Mitch

Don't feel bad; we all have brain farts every now and again. I know I have my share of them.

Brian: I have a little saying," the man who hasn't made any mistakes hasn't done much in life." I put a clutch in my 130 last fall. Just as I was ready to split the tractor 2 friends came along. I had all wires, fuel line, hydraulic lines, etc. off tractor. Had a bottle jack under clutch housing and front end rad and engine blocked on pallet jack. That is where I was at when they arrived. In 1 hour 15 min we had clutch changed and tractor bolted back together. My friends then left, all I had to do was wire tractor and do plumbing. Bingo, I couldn't get proper clutch free travel. I went to dinner around 5 pm, decided tractor had to come apart again. All that help was great, but things just went too fast. At 6pm I went back split tractor again turned the clutch disc over and put it all back together, ready to start at 11 pm. All it would do was backfire and pop. I went to house got cleaned up went to bed. Next am I discovered I did exactly as you did, right order wrong direction. That is what can happen when a novis hurries at mechanical work. Hugh

Don't feel bad, everybody makes those kinds of mistakes in their career as a wrench. You have learned a valuble lesson that will never be forgotten. By the way, i did a valve job once because i had 2 wires switched on a truck.

Hey Bri: As I was looking for something to read I came across your post. I thought, cool lets see if he screwed up worse then I have before. Well we are about the same but I bet you a tractor that it will never happen again to you and someday you will make somebody look really stupid. Good job stepping up to the plate and all those who replied. Brian in California.
