I have a 1940 Td-6 crawler that, up until yesterday, never gave me any problem. Yesterday I pressure washed the tractor take care not to get near the magneto, gauges or any other sensitive part. After the tractor dried off I tried to start i. It started up on gas but was rough like it was only firing on 2 cylinders. After a minute off this and me playin around with the choke, it died never to start again. Now when trying to start it on gas, It only backfires (LOUDLY) as if it were out of time, but I know its not. After going through it I've found all cylinders are firing on time, and it is getting adequate fuel. Stranger still, when I went to tow start it on Diesel, it only smoked white and agin failed to start. Did water somehow get where it shouldn't have? Is this just by coincidence a mechanical failure? Any information anyone could provide would be beneficial. Thanks for your help****Richard

Thanks all for the input. I never took the plugs off until after wards but each was taken off and put back individually. I may pull the mag cap off and use a blow drier in case any water did get in . I appreciate all your help and will update after the next trial.****Richard

Did you take off the plug wires when you washed it??? If you did, when you put them back did you consider that the magneto rotates counter clockwise!!! The mag on the gas start diesels rotates opposite to the gasoline engines, makeing for confusion. I made the assumption on my MD, that it was clockwise rotation and it actually almost started that way, but it backfires and blows oil out of the air cleaner. Check that your plug wires are correct for COUNTER Clockwise rotation of the mag!

Its fairly common for those H-4 mags to get water in around the coil cap and then it works down to the point chamber. Are the points dry? I always run a bead of silicone sealer around the coil cap when I rebuild one of those mags because those @#$%^& little coil cap gaskets always fall out of place. I've never had one of those mags get wet again after I did this.... Brian

Not starting on gas side is miner if it started before you washed it. Maybe you got water in cap or plug wires are bad, water around the coil. If you can pull start it try on gas first then try the diesel side, on the diesel you will have to get the motor turning pretty fast to get it to start. I use the same gear as the tractor pulling me (both MD's in fourth works the best) good luck, I know it will start again.

Richard: Did you see that string about the TD14 on the Crawler forum here on YTMag? Somewhat similar problem. The answers might spark an idea. That string was started Apr22 @17:34 labled TD14 popping.. by Greg Kenyon. For me, anytime it rains, I suspect a distributor cap having too much moisture inside it causing poor plug firing. G.

.. a loud backfire could be a crossfire from one plug wire to another plug wire thus firing wrong cylinder. Easy for electrical high voltage to jump across older cracked wires. The plug under compression presents itself as a higher resistance due to compression. Then the current jumps across to a cylinder not under compression and fires and a valve(exhaust?) could very well be open giving you a bang. You can be careful washing but I'll still guess it is a wet electrical item. Washing is the only thing that you did since it ran well? G.
