I painted my tractor about a month ago. Everything went well. Today I went to use it and some gas came out around the gas cap and bubbled up the paint. I didn't use hardner is this my problem.I know the gas caused the problem but I usually use hardner in my paint but my IH dealer said I didn't need it anymore. Has any one else had this problem and if so what did they do to correct the problem.

If you still have the original gas cap on an old letter series, instead of just replacing the gasket you should get a new cap from the IH dealer. The original ones had only one small vent hole and with a new gasket the tank often can't breath and you can have a pressure build up under some circumstances. This can be dangerous. I know this is not an answer to your paint problem, but I noted the suggestion about the gas cap gasket and since I had the same problem on my Super M, when I went to buy a replacement gasket the dealer convinced me that I needed a new cap for the above reasons. They look just like the original so this shouldn't bother the appearence. I kept the old cap and gave it to the guy I sold the M to last year, just in case some future resorer gets picky.

Sound like you have the same problem I do....bad gasket on gas cap. I just have'nt gotten around to replacing. Mine constantly "seeps" a small amount of fuel when nearly full and on rough terrain. Replace that and wipe up spills and paint should be ok. Short of that you can paint tank with urethane or fuel resistant paint. Cheaper to replace gasket and watch spills. I use mine as working tractor, and the damage to the paint around tank is par for the course so to speak. Goes along with the scratches from brush, etc.

I restored a Cub in 1998 and the paint is lifting around the cap. I even used hardener. I guess thats part of restoring a tractor and using it.

So did factory paint bubble up with gas spills? I don't think so or most 50 year old tractors would be nude!
