Hi, I know this is not a strictly tractor question, but tonight, wife and I visited an American circus. (Rare in England), as we came out of the Big Top and through the park there was this line up of International lorries and trucks.
I will go back and ask permission to take photos of them. My question is: are there any particular models that are extra rare and that I should pay extra attention to ? Are any trucks fitted with tractor engines? Thanks in advance Richard.

Since you are in the UK. I will hope to answer some of your questions. The great IHC company
is still in business in the US. It is called
Navistar. They build medium duty and heavy duty
trucks (lorries to you) and semi truck tractors.
under the International name. The construction
business is now Dresser or was until recently.
the agriculture business was bought by the Case
corporation, called CASEIH. Which is now part of
New Holland (Fiat of Italy) called CASE NEW HOLLAND. As part of the EU's agreement to that
merger, CASEIH had to sell some assets. Namely
the Doncaster, UK tractor factory which was bought
by Landini, and is called McCormick Tractors
International. they are building the same design
tractors as the old IH 84 series tractors (C series) The CX is modified somewhat but it is same
as what you can get at your local CASEIH dealer
until July 2002. Now as of 2002 you can get a
McCormick tractor and a International truck. Who
would have thought that in 1985 when IHC filed
for bankruptcey.

Many of the lighter versions of the S-line trucks used the DT 466, which is the same engine used in the 4366 and 4386 articulated tractors. That same engine block was used in many of the 66 and 86 series tractors, using different variations of stroke and bore. Thus the 414, DT414, 436 and DT436. I don't believe the 466 was ever used without Turbo, I may be wrong. These engines were also used in 88 series tractors.

Richard I think DT 466 diesel engine was used in both tractors and trucks. This would be a medium duty truck International uses engines from suppliers outside of company for heavy duty trucks.

Hi Richard,
The 560 gas engine was based on a truck engine that was called the 264. The tractor version is a 263. I believe there are other examples as well. I don't know about any of IH trucks to be rare, they made a bunch of them. Alot of them are still running. Them old Red Diamonds are tough!!

I gotta ask, what is a lorries?

Hello Richard, I dont know of trucks with tractor engines, but the w-40 tractor had Ih's 6 cylinder truck engine according to one of my books. The best book I'm familiar with for vintage truck photo's, along with everything else IH is "150 Years Of International Harvester" by C.H. Wendel. It wont help you with current values but its loaded with pics and info.Hope this helps.
