There is a old man I know that lives just up the road. He has a 48 H. He bought it brand new,and has only put 3000 hours on it. It is a dual fuel and has hydralics and a belt pulley. It is complete and has pto sheild, battery box, shutters, heat sheild, but both front tires are shot. It has two sets of front and rear weights. The paint still looks like it came from the factory. It has never been rained on. He wants 2000. Is this too much? If it is how much should I offer? I need an answer fast, as he is in bad health. If I don,t buy it before he dies his wife will never sell it. Thanks

I would say you did fine. One can put a ton of moola in a "beater." Nothing beats a nice, original tractor as far as I'm concerned. I never mind paying a little extra for "nice."

Thanks for all your replys. I went and bought the tractor today. I put air in the front tires and drove it onto the trailer. It hasn't been started in 6 months and it started with a hand crank in under a minute.(just wanted to try it) I bought 2 front tires off of a local guy for 20$ each. I took the old tires and rims to him and got the new ones put on. $56.78 for having old tires took off and new ones put on. I drove the tractor for 30 minutes today it runs perfect.
Thanks for all of the good advice keep up the good work.

MH, after reading your post I thought I'd better say something..I would buy that H sight unseen as you have described it..I paid $150 for a set of four wheel weights...$1850 now... $400 for rear tires..$1450 now...$50 for shutters..$1400 now...$60 for a battery box...$1340 now...$200 for a used belly pump....$1140 now ..2 gallons of paint $64...$1076 now....do I need say more...That is a bargain compared to buying a run of the mill H for $500-800 and then spending hundereds of dollars to restore it. In the long run that could be a cheap tractor. In southern Ontario a tractor dealer is asking $3000 for a super H in this weeks Western Ontario Farmer publication, another is asking $2000 for an H..run of the mill, nothing special about it, likely well worn. Go for it...Mike in Exeter Ontario

Another thought to consider....you could easily put that much and more into a lesser tractor and not have as nice a tractor. Much to be said for one that is all there and in that nice of condition. I would much rather buy a tractor as you describe than one that has "supposedly" been completely restored. What you see is what you get in this case.

See if he has any documentation, ie; Original bill of sale, service records etc. $2000 is a bit much for an average H, but all original...

Where exactly is that located? What is the guy's name? and phone number? I have a certified check here for $2000 and my brother is hooking up the trailer to go. You can email the info so I can call him up yet tonight.

In other words, BUY IT!! Where else are you going to find an original H with all parts intact and even the original paint???? And 3000 hours in 54 years?

Steven

Yup...good finds do happen. Sounds like a great tractor to me. I once bought a 1936 Studebaker car that was 30 years old and it only had 2600 miles on it. I didn't even bother to argue about the price. Same with a Best 30 crawler that was never left outside over night. Stuff like that is getting a bit hard to come by at any price. I bought a 1928 Packard all weather broughm once that was a terrible gray color. It had been blocked up during WW II and the tires were used on farm equipment. When I got it home, I discovered the car was covered with vasoline and when I cleaned it with Dupont car cleaner, the paint was just like new.
