I wanted to ask the group what you think my tractor might be worth. I don't really want to sell but I may have "picked up the scent" of a MTA, and I'm about to have too many IH projects. If I could get a good price for mine I might be persuaded to let it go. So I'm just curious: My tractor is a 1949 Cub. By the serial # it's the 10th '49 built. In fact, there's a picture of it before I bought it in Spencer Yost's Antique Tractor Bible. I got it sort of as a "fixer-upper" and it still needs a lot. It's a cute little booger but it needs some mechanicals to make it nice. Right now the carb. gasket is spitting gas and it won't run, hopefully it's just a gasket and not a warped carb. Governor is not very responsive. Has a new-repro silver seat, and new teardrop headlights. I had the starter rebuilt but I use the hand crank: it has mag ignition, no other wiring right now. Had the mag cleaned and services last summer. New 45deg. "old style" Firestone rubber all the way around. Very nice sheet metal, no dents. Touch Control. No battery box or tool box, no gauges in instrument panel. Some !@#$head broke a chunk out of the clutch housing but all other castings are unbroken and casting numbers seem to line up. It's going to need a clutch job before long. Steering is not the tighest but not the loosest either. It smokes a little. I have a set of front universal mounting frames but no rear, just the drawbar. PTO is nice and quiet. Also have a belt pulley for it. Sooooo, what do you all think it's worth? I know I won't get my money out of it, But sometimes we're willing to make sacrifices for another tractor! What would you do? Does "The Diesel" as I like to call it stay or go??

Thanks, Al

Sell it, and buy the MTA.

Got a picture you can email me? I had the same problem with the carb. Bought a new gasket, and it still spit gas. Didn't have the budget for a new carb, so I honed the surfaces as flat as I could. Seemed to seal things up better now. Good luck whatever you decide.

Unless you are limber enough to kick yourself in the butt each time you think about it you better hang on to it! I always regret it when I sell something. Fireman

I have a Farmall Cub, and I like it very much, especially the off-set design of the tractor makes it so easy for cultivating. I'd fix it up and keep it.

I hate to say it, but it sounds like a $500 machine to me. While Cubs are popular in Alabama, the prices hover between $1500 and 2000 for tractors in good condition. It sould like yours needs that much or more to get it right. It depends on location, but I bought one for $750 in better condition with implements.

Every time I get rid of something I've put alot of sweat and blood into I'm always sorry later.
But then if we keep everything then we get buried in stuff.
I think that the SMTA is a great tractor but it can't do alot of things the cub can, and vice versa. besides how much room does the cub take up?
My wife keeps telling me that if I bring home one more project then she'll divorce me. if this is the case you must decide which you'll miss more the tractor or your wife?

It is up to you! Try using EBAY if you decide
to sell it! But I can say for myself, that I
own 2 IH tractors, and I would like to have everyone they made! I just think there great!
My Grandfather ran them, my Father and now me.
So I'm just RED ALL OVER!
