There is play in the steering of my wide-front 806. It is coming from the joint between the spindle and steering arm. This is a splined connection and the splines are worn. I need to repair this on both sides of the font end. New spindles and steering arms come to over $600. Before laying out this kind of dough, I thought I would try to repair it by drilling a 5/16 dia hole all the way through the steering arm and spindle (at the splines) and inserting a solid steel pin. I figure I don't have anything to lose because if this doesn't work out, then I just buy the new parts. Does anyone have any other ideas on how to repair this?

My 1568 has been running for about 10 years with one of those liquid metals in those splines. Still nice and tight. I used Belzoa (spelling?) but I think they are all similar. Beats welding for later removal.

Thanks for the suggestion, Dave. It should like a quick easy fix that holds up pretty well!

Thanks for the suggestions Kev and Wayne. I remember my dad reading "Successful Farmer" magazine. I had forgotten about that magazine long ago. The taper-lock steering arms sound like a good idea.

There at least used to be a company that sold a arm for this that used a tapered sleave to lock this all together..Was in the back of Sucesful Farming or Farm Industry News. Wish I had more to offer. No idea if this worked or not.

Could try and find an old style spindle with the half moon key. Or a company by the name of A and I or A and E in Rock Valley, Iowa sells new ones at about half price. But most people around here just get it welded. Probably not the best fix but it works. Those spindles are pretty durn hard to drill.
