I finally got to replacing the bolster bushings on my H, so far so good but I have a couple of questions: The lower bushing has a hole in it about half-way up,does this need to
align with the grease zerk opening, the old one did not?,and the bolster pivot shaft has some free play up and down, under the thrust bearing
there is one spacer on it,does it need to be
shimmed up snug, the shop manual I have doesn't
mention any spacers? Thanks in advance, Matt

Matt, I believe if it were me I would check that lower part and see if at some time that lower bearing had wore into the shaft some, giving it some freedom up and down. You certainly want as little play as possible. That upper gear is tapered and once together it will hammer up and down going at higher speeds. I would put it together and do not draw the gear down tight, but with it together check the play up and down, and shim it below the bottom thrust bearing keeping as little play as you can and still not bind. Yes that bushing hole must line up with grease zerk. Good luck.
