1950 H runs cold???

I have a 1950 model H. It starts in a heartbeat and runs great year round. However, it always runs cold by the temperature gauge. Currently, the gauge never leaves the cold zone, although it does move slightly after quite a long warm up at full throttle. In the heat of summer (here in southern Indiana), it will warm up to somewhere at the bottom of the run zone after a few hours work. Usually, it sits at the bottom of the run zone or at the top of cold. Once, on a 90 degree day, after a full afternoon of bushhogging, the gauge reached just past the middle of the run zone. In the summer, I use sae 30 wt. Currently, I am running with 10w30. One important note...there is a crack at the very top of the radiator, and the overflow line from the radiator cap area is broken. It still holds plenty of coolant just fine. From my understanding of the H's cooling system, the coolant will not circulate without pressure in the radiator (which I am lacking). I wondered at first if the gauge was just reading faulty because the hot coolant wasn't circulating to the temp sensor, but the engine never seems to run hot, even in the peak of summer, it is fairly cool to the touch. I wonder if perhaps the thermostat is stuck in the open position? Any ideas would be appreciated...

Thanks-

Krey

The thermostat is loose in the housing, side to side or up and down, coolant is by-passing. I had the same problem, after few times taking it apart,I figured it out, I shimmed mine so it would not deflect up at an angle and by-pass when under water pump pressure. Mine engine was a C-123 though, but it runs in the good green now.

Thanks for the quick reply...
I've been told that the cooling system won't circulate without pressure in the radiator (which I lack). Is there any truth to this? I had the crack in the radiator soldered tight for a few weeks so that I had pressure, but it didn't run any hotter, so pressure doesn't seem to be the issue. What's involved in checking out the thermostat?

The H has a water pump, so it has nothing to do with pressure. It'll circulate reguardless. The early H's system was not pressurized, but on the 50, you'll find a place on your cap, if it's original where you can place an oring on the cap. This is what my '51 M has anyways

My '46 H came with no thermostat, too. It's a pretty easy chore to put one in. In addition to having a new thermostat you'll be wanting the gasket that goes between the thermostat part of the housing and the water pump. And if the hose to the top of the radiator is old now would be a good time. Mine had a brand new hose; the engine had just been rebuilt. With no thermostat. Go figure.
The hardest part of the job is keeping the thermostat in position while fighting the hose back over the housing.

The thermostat lives inside the housing where the large upper radiator hose connnects to the engine (over the water pump). The housing is held in place with 2 capscrews - it's easily removed.

When you get the housing off you will find either: A - an empty housing (no thermostat at all), or B - A non-functioning thermostat stuck inside the housing. If you find it's "B", take a large screwdriver and dig the old t'stat out - you will probably destroy whatever is left of the t'stat when you do.

Auto Zone stocks a t'stat that looks different from the stock IHC t'stat, but fits and works fine. The stock number #800-180. (Last one I bought was $2.99 - about $15 cheaper than the IHC replacement....)

Replacement thermostats may be the problem, i don't think they are as thick in the sealing flange as the oems. mine was a autozone special and i shimmed it tight in the housing, warms up to 180 every time now. they got to warm up to burn the condesation out of the engine.
