Farmed for some years, then went to town to work. Been with a CaseIH dealer since the 80's. Worked there as a mechanic for 12 years or so, then went into sales. Still consider myself a farmer at heart. Try to find things to do to keep the tractors exercised!

I'm retired, spent most of my working life doing factory maintenance, was a CNC machine tool repairman the last 15 yrs. Raised on a farm in so. Michigan(a Farmall farm), aircraft mechanic in the Air Force, then went to factory maintenance because I didn't like airline maintenance. Farmed in early '80's and lost nearly everything I had. Worked for Laser Systems Mfr. last 15 yrs. of my working life and restored a couple of Johnny Poppers('48 A and GW) to have some fun wrenching. Work part-time for a farmer friend and go to antique tractor shows. Life ain't bad--.

I have just about all IH equipment and many antique IH tractors and implements. Still a member of the local VFD but this back of mine prevents me from doing anything useful. Just sold my Ford 5000 but still have a 49 Farmall H project. I'm a maintainer, fixer, fire putter-outer. I deal with a lot of Perl scripts, SQL scripts, UNIX shell scripts, Pro*C programs and some NT stuff. I don't write anything. I just keep stuff going.

But I'd much rather be farming or something like that. I also do wood working and home improvements on the side.

I found several jobs very interesting in life.

My first job after growing up on a farm and off to get an education was 6 years as Senior Lab tech in large electronics Company doing research & development work. Next was 6 years as pilot/owner of a crop dusting sevice in Montanna & Western N Dakota. This flying was "life at it best and worst" Next was about 20 years buying/selling land and putting up new homes. That allowed me to relax more and now I've been watching/trading short term in the stock market for the last 15 years.. and play with Farmalls. The last move (befor the cementary) will be back to a small hobby farm this year (God willing) Harvey

I now have a JD 730 ES with all the options and a IHC 400 with a TA. Ive heard a lot of pros and cons about the merits of a TA and I want to see for myself how they perform.

This has to be the best site on antique tractors and Im on it every day. Its good to see there is young blood keeping this hobby going for the future.

I was a Jeweler for 9 yrs, until I lost most of my vision due to Diabetes. After some eye surgery I was able to go back to school and get a degree in Aviation Technology-I had worked on airplanes most of my life, mostly Radials and Allison V-12's.I worked at American Trans Air out of Indianapolis for a while until my Kidneys went bad (from diabetes) so I had a kidney transplant and retired to a 15 acre farm in Mooreland,IN-the birthplace of Wilbur Wright-near Muncie. Anywho, having operated steam engines and tractors-threshing,sawmill plowing, etc., since I was 10,I feel at home with my Super H and AC-B,even tho some days I can't see the computer screen.I've done a lot of stuff from flying to firing a Locomotive on a railroad and whitewater rafting-that many people never have a chance to do,so I feel lucky to still get to drive my old tractors....slowly!!Thanks,BillJ

I am a Journeyman Electrician/job foreman, also carry a State of Ohio Fire Alarm License. I work for a really great company in Piqua, OH. I grew up on 12 acres,we had steers (raised them from bottle calves, then sold the meat),sheep and show horses, and dad still uses the 54' Super H for all chores. I have 5 acres of my own and have a 51' H and a 53' Cub. Looking to put out a huge garden this year so the kids can learn what work is ,and all the money they make from selling the veggies will go into their bank accounts for cars, school ect. Not looking to have them make a mint, just learn a few lessons about life.

I grow sweet corn and squash, have some Charlais calves, two H's and an M as well as two working tractors , love cats and calves and old tractors and two new granddaughters..enjoy the farm and the life, but live in town..still thats where my friends are ,where we drink beer and play cards, sweat when we hay and care for each other.. thank God I'm a country boy..there's grease under my fingernails and manure on the soles of my boots ..what more could a guy ask for?????

I'm a "construction claims consultant", preparing schedule analyses, financial analyses, and stuff like that. In other words, when a construction company sues soemeone, I do the analytical work to determine damages.

Spent 14 years as a brick mason before going to college, then 8-1/2 years with Kiewit Construction, then to consulting.

We've got 40 acres and are just finishing up the log house. I did about 75% of the work myself, and am I sorry now!

We run a huge herd of six mama cows. They keep the taxes agricultural. And I like to watch them graze. Anyone need to buy a yearling for the freezer?

I run a '43 M with a Farmhand F11B loader. Looking for a 400 for after we finish the house.

Grew up on a SD farm, taught & worked 15 yrs in public school administration, but got out of it when "extra-curricular" activities become more important than education about 23 yrs ago. Went into the planning field with an area development agency & now work as a professional planner for a civil engineering firm. Love the work almost as much as working on my old tractors. Live in the heart of the "real" midwest-the Corn Palace City of Mitchell, SD. If any of you ever stop to look at it as you're passing by on I-90, stop into the office & say HI-we're right across the street from the back door! (We've got a new Cabela's too, right off I-90. My $0.02 worth. jal-SD)

Mechanical Engineer.... Toro Co. I work at metal component manufacturing plant. Nobody builds tractors like these Farmalls anymore. I have a '39 H, a '55 300. A super C is in the works now... It's getting tougher to keep them all busy with work around dad's hobby farm. I'm trying to save up for a farmstead of my own, but land prices near Minneapolis/St. Paul are really inflated... You have to go about 60 mins or so out of town for the prices to be fair.

I am an engineering department mgr at Motorola Semiconductors and weekend tender of an orchard, vineyard, garden and a couple of critters. Old tractors started when I got tired of mowing around trees with a Kubota/frontloader and decided an antique tractor mower might be the answer. I liked it so much that one turned into four old tractors, three now restored, one per year and one ready to start for 2002.

I design container refrigeration units in central New York. I grew up on a small farm (85 acres, also in central New York) that my great grandfather bought in 1882. I now own 65 acres of it. Worked on a neighbors dairy/potato farm through high school and college. We have rented the land since Dad sold off his Black Angus in 1986 at age 76. Dad farmed with 1 tractor and now my brother and I have 4 (3 IH and a Ford).

The farm has been in the family for well over 100 years. I fell in love with the country life and finally moved out here. (Delaware Co., Oh.) I love it. Went to Voc. school & spent 8 yrs as a mechanic in the National Guard, that's how I got in working on tractors.

Get to work with some really nice folks (both co-workers and donors). Don't know if I'd be here in the City if I didn't have my place in Maine and 40 acres in the Catskills to get away to. Country living ("including but not limited to" cooking, gardening, wrench work and just laying down on my own grass) is what keeps me from slipping away with the pressures of the city side of my existence.

Jack of all trades. I'm the news editor for a regional weekly paper and I live on my familly's farm. (We've been at this little game here in South Texas for about 115 years now.) Before I went back to school, I was brake mechanic for a heavy truck dealership, did some diesel work. Now, like The Red, I'm messing with a pair of Bs to relieve stress. I also spend a considerable amount of time on the upside of some green machine... whos name will remain unknown... doing work around the farm.

I grew up in this area around the farms, including the family farm, and have kicked myself many times for letting it get away. I guess I was too young and dumb to know any better at the time.
I work on old tractors and equipment to keep some connection to the things I enjoyed as a kid.

However I grew up in farm country, did farm work as a kid, married a farmer's daughter, and would really rather be farming. I worked my way through electronics school as a small engine mechanic. I do a lot of standby generator repair on the side, as most generator repair people are electricians only and don't seem to know much about engines, at least in this area. My hobby was electronics, up until a few years ago, when I could no longer relax at home with what I did at work all day any more. :)

I am an engineer for the rr. Make sure you stop at all the crossings.
I was raised in the country, Dad had a road construction company. I 'helped' out at the farmers next door. Currently, I am trying to save some dough to get a small farm.
good luck

Barry: I am a Civil Engineer who spent alot of time doing highway construction but now do strictly engineering. I never have farmed and grew up in town, so I always wonder why I have an interest in antique tractors. I live on a little piece of dirt next to a couple of big citys sou I am able to park some of my hobbies.

i'm a 55 yr. old repair technician for charter wired world cable tv in w.tn. i still crawl under houses and climb poles, work on fiber optic cable and digital systems (pipeline innernet services). i got into old tractors back in 1961 when my family bought a 440 acre farm in n. cent. mo. i saw a early john deere "a" engine rebuilt in the front yard (head taken off, taken to the welding shop to be welded and put back on and running in 3 days) i started with john deere, lost interest, and found a post production german export f-30 farmall in 1977 and didn't know what it was until the early 90s there are only 8 known to exist the last time i checked. i have john deere, farmall, and minne mo running and others waiting. i enjoy this site the most and would miss yt mag i.h. forum the most if i lost my computer-----

This is a very interesting array of occupations of people that like IH stuff. I really enjoy reading the chat line and I save a lot of it for help when I get started on some of my project IH's. I'm a University professor of agronomy. Grew up on a farm in southern Ill and just can't get the farm out of me. I've been collecting IH tractors for 10 years. I live near New Richmond, WI.
