My dad and I are restoring a Farmall B, a Farmall A, a Farmall Super A and a Cub. We are trying to figure out what fabric was original on the seats. All of them have the crimped edges, so we know there was some sort of fabric. I've seen the silver canvas, the black canvas and the red/white vinyl. Does anyone know which was correct for which tractor, or if they were all options?

A black seat cover would blister your backside here in Arizona in the summertime!

My understanding is the fabric was black. The theory as to why everybody remembers silver is the color was poor quality and wore off or faded quickly and turned silver. Dave.

I don't know what models your tractors are but I remember when we bought a new c farmall in 1950 and the seat was the silver canvas type material.

I've seen Black. Hardly see em around though. Mostly you see the red and white. You can buy seat covers for about $16 at the IH dealer. I like the slip covers. I've got one on my M. You could buy one and use it for all the tractors. Just paint all the seats red. Just a thought.

I am not sure of the exact color either, but I saw a custom one one-time that was red, witha white square and the IH symbol in the center, like on the decals of a super C or super A. Just thought it looked nice, although I think my uncle researced this for his yellow and white IH cub that it was silver.

The remnants of original seats that I remember seeing when I was a kid were a silver, heavy canvass-like material with a material similar to a heavy felt underneath for padding.
I have read some comments by Guy Fay where he said the older ones were originaly black in color. I'm not old enough to remember that, but he is usually very accurate in his research so I'll take his word for it.
One thing I am sure of is this; No matter what you use or how much research you do to try and be authentic, somebody will tell you that it isn't right because "Dad's or Grandpa's wasn't that way". You can bet on it.

Darrell Darst would know, he recovers them using the correct material, and the correct color. 636.356.4764 I do not believe any of them were made of vinyl.
