What was the 1st tractor you operated? What was the 1st tractor you Owned? My first tractor to operate was a Super C tractor of my uncles. I just bought my first tractor, a '48 M Farmall.

My first tractor to drive (when i was 7 years old) was a C. I can remember my dad helping me let the clutch out without throwing him off the back. I dont fully own a tractor, but i am part owner of 2 H's, super M, 2 C's, 200, Oliver 1800, 806, and a case 970. Good diversity!

Fond memories of a 40 H Farmall, was the first tractor I drove and I was the one who put it on the trailer when it sold. Still have Grandad's 53 CA Allis, first purchase (to add to our fleet)was a 46 AI International.

First drove my Dad's Farmall Super C bailing hay when I was 10. We used a New Holland Super hayliner 67 with a chute pulling a wagon. My older brother was working on a neighbors farm. Since I couldn't lift the the bales yet I got tractor duty while Dad stacked bales on the wagon.
The first one I bought was a Ford 861 diesel. I have since added 2 Farmall 460 gas tractors. The Super C stays at my brothers now, of couse I get to use it anytime.

My first tractor was a Cub and I am still operating that tractor. I was 10 and had to sit on the front of the seat so my left leg would push the clutch all the way down. Grandpa would let me drive the Cub all over the farm. I spent that entire summer on the farm driving that tractor. He showed me how to stack loose hay, how to drive up and down hills with a wagon full of hay etc. Lessons I still use to this day, 40 years later. Then when I was 15, I worked for a guy down the road from Grandpa that had JD's and we cut and baled alfalfa all summer. 100# bales made a tough 15/16 year old that year. Worked from 0500 to 1800 hrs each day and loved it. Life was sooooo much simpler then. Oh for another 1960's Oregon summer. Grandma could cook like you couldn't believe. Nobody cared about cholesterol and she lived to be 109 1/2.

First to steer from Dad's lap was a high-drum cotton picker on a Farmall M. He said, "Just keep that row going between those things (guides) down there." Too excited to sleep that night. First tractor to drive for real work was a JD 70 spraying grass under the grapes. Another night's sleep lost. First tractor to own is a '47 Farmall H. I have not heard it run since it was drug home, so I haven't lost that night's sleep yet.

The first tractor I ever drove was a '41 B John Deere, this was in the summer of '42, and I drove the tractor pulling a rubber tired 7X14 hay rack wagon and a John Deere hay loader while two people loaded loads of loose hay. The B was a really nice tractor, 6 speeds with electric starter and lights. The first tractor I owned was a 1953 Farmall Super M, and it was still one darned good tractor even though it was 26 years old when I got it.

My first tractor to operate was a 1948 MD Farmall. I pulled a disk with it and used a No. 7 John Deere mowing machine (sickle bar). My grandfather or father wouldn't let me bushhog until I was up in the high school years and even then only small stuff. I have seen my father cut some mighty bad stuff with that old MD and IH bushhog.

I learned the ropes on an Allis Chalmers "C",was scuffling white beans for days at a time(two row scuffler). Dad set me to breaking it apart to put a new ring gear in it at age 14 and even though I became a teacher I have had a wrench in my hand ever since and have farmed for several years as well. I am retired from teaching and work as a mechanic at a friend's service garage. I own two H's an M ,a Case I-H 584 and a Case 300 loader tractor. There's grease under my fingernails and theres manure on my work boots, love cats and calves and old tractors...my life story in a paragraph Mike in Exeter Ontario

In terms of Internationals, the first i drove was an 886. I bought my first tractor (a 1940 Farmall M) a few months ago.

Thank you all for the excellant posts, love reading about all the history. I am really learning alot from all you guys. Being only 23 it wasn't all that long ago, probably about 18 years ago when Grandpa let me drive his tractor, and I am not ashamed to say it was an Oliver 550. Grandpa died about 6 years ago, and Grandma keeps saying that since no one uses it any more she wants to get rid of it, man I hope she don't, I think I have her talked out of it. I was in the process of restoring it when I bought my first tractor, about 4 months ago, a 450. Hopefully I get it done soon so I can finish up my Grandfathers tractor, so Granny don't want to sell it.Keep up the good work guys, our younger generation is looking up. -Scoob

First tractor I owned was a 1967 1206 in 1973 but had spent many hours on Dad's previous tractors including his 1256. I was 6 when I first drove that 8n, it was 1961. Only 41 years ago!! The first tractor I ever operated was a Super A. I was 11 or 12 years old and my first job was driving to pull the rope to lift loose hay into the barn with a hay fork. Second job was driving the wagon to pick up hay bales in the field. I was too small to load bales. That was when my Dad was converting from loose hay to bales. The first tractor that I owned myself was ... a Super A. Bought it in pieces about 25 years later(not the same one though) and restored it and used it with a Woods belly mower to mow my 5 acres.

The first tractor they but me on by myself was the little farmall 100, I was around 7 or 8 yrs old.My job was to drive when they loaded basket tomatoes for the local canning factory.

First thing I had to master was letting the clutch out slowly without jarring the load and knoking over the baskets. This got trickier as the load on the wagon got heavier. After you get helled at a few times you get good real quick. Like my older brothers always told me,Your not going to lear any yonger. They were the ones loading the baskets.

I started raking in the summer of 1972, a few monthes before my 7th birthday on a Farmall H. Looking back, I was probably a little young to operate machinery but I was having the time of my life. We sold that old H and another old dual fuel H in 1996. Kinda wish we would have kept at least one of them.

Currently I am in the process of restoring a '46 H and have a '49 H back in Mo that I will be picking up in June. This question brought back some great memories. Dad has sold his farm and retired to town now. He got a great kick out of driving the '46 H last fall when I picked it up in Mo to bring home to Co. FM

The first tractor was a Farmall Super C, row crop. That was my grandfather's, then I ran a Super C with a quick hitch which is my Father's, I recently purchased my Grandfather's Super C from my WPS cousin. Although it will need work I plan to restore it in two years, I bought an Allis Chalmer's B, which is 80% restored, then a Ferguson TO-30 which has the engine almost put back together. My next machine which is a Centaur KV series is the next one to bring home.

I was 8 when my uncle told me to take the wheel of his IH H or C. He owned a vineyard in Paw Paw Michigan. I was so excited that I snagged a row and ripped out the first post and wires for him... Oops! What are those pedals for, Uncle Ed?!

My first tractor, a Ford 860, came with its little sister, a '48 8N, at an auction in Missouri.

I'm helping my son restore his first real tractor, a '47 Cub, that I got for $500 down the road. He restored a Sears SS-12 before that when he was about 12.

The first one I drove was an 8N. Actually, I just steered it from dad's lap. The first one I drove solo was either dad's JD 430 (GREAT little tractor) or the neighbor's 630 JD (wide front end, 3 point hitch, and a 4" straight pipe that could be heard about a mile away.) My first tractor was a '47 Case SC that I should never have sold. But - this IS a FARMALL forum, right? Now we have a '47 H with cultivators on it, and we will probably go get the '51 Un-Super H this weekend! I like the red ones but am not prejudiced - I kinda like 'em all! Fireman

I didn't grow up on a farm but had uncles that had small farms that would ride me around on a Ford workmaster when I was a kid.The 1st tractor I owned in a 53 super C I bought 3 years ago.The link is to a photo of my Grandpa Walter Shuler on his old Case. My dad said it was one of the first tractors on rubber tires around Aldrich MO anyone had seen at that time.Lot of small farms and very little money back then. He died in 1963 right after I was born and dad said his tractor sold at auction for $500. Dad said he was very proud of it and always kept it clean and serviced and built a rock garage to keep it in. I would have loved to had it but was only one at the time. Someone got a good old tractor. I have farmalls but love all the old machines

Age 12, 1956, Nebraska: an even then field-weary JD M, pulling a hay sled while the bigger boys picked up bales. RedTed/MO.

Back in 1964 when I was a wee sprout, Grandpa let me steer his IH self propelled Combine when cutting beans. Since I was only 4 he had to work the pedals and "correct" my steering if I wandered out of the rows. I don't remember the exact model it was but I think it was like a 410 but had no cab. I do remember the dust! He also let me steer one of his Ms when cultivating. Later after he retired from farming and had a huge yard to mow, I drove his 1966 Cub lo boy. I cut that yard until I was 38 yrs old, but he had sold the cub and bought a kubota from a cousin around 83. I have the Kubota now but wish I had the cub!Dad bought a 51 Ferguson TO20 back in 78 or so and I spent many hours running the bushhog and also hauling firewood with the fork attachment we had for it.We have used it for years with no problems outside of a stick getting under the hood and puntching a hole in the battery. The first bigger(than the kubota) tractor I owned is a 29 10-20.I have since added a 35 F-12 to my fleet. I would love to find grandpas old f-20 or one of his Ms.

1941 Farmall M, I used to steer it in the morning while dad fed the cattle. I was too short to reach the pedals, but if I slid to the front of the seat I could hit the kill switch with my toe. After feeding dad would take me to kindergarten. My grandfather bought the M brand new 3 months before he died, it was the 1st tractor on our farm, and it's still going strong, I plan to restore it soon.

First tractor I drove was probably our W-4 with a hay rake, but I don't recall how old I was. First tractor I owned was my '41 B. Got it about 10 years ago and still have it.

Growing up, I used to summer with my grandparents and great-grandfather. Used to ride along from the time I was little. They had a BN, an H and an row-crop Oliver. 12 was the magic age when you got to solo on the tractors, and I started on the BN. Never did get to drive the Oliver before they let it go to get a 400 (I think Grandpa had his doubts about me figuring out the shift pattern on the Oliver!) Just tracked down the BN and bought it back. A lot of fond memories on it-I used to ride on the left axle with the drawbar support as a footrest when my great-granfather would cultivate beans. We'd ride for hours and he'd occasionally break forth with some neat old jingles and rhymes he'd learned as a kid. AS far as others, I bought and rebuilt a wide front SuperC last summer, and plan to spend this year getting the old BN back in shape.

I remember as a young boy looking at my grandfather's H and 300. I used to stand on the drawbar going from one field to the other as he drove.

The first tractor I drove was an old Ford 9N.

I bought my first tractor 3 years ago...a 1952 Cub. I followed that with a 1954 Super H and most recently a 1948 John Deere M.

The first tractor I operated alone was a Farmall A.Pa told me he absolutely would not allow me to run ANY equipment alone until I was 13 years old and stuck to it.The day of my 13th birthday he had me take the A into the woods and bring home a load of firewood.I was not to drive any higher than 3rd gear even if I was on the road.We also had an AC WD and I wish I still had it!It had lots of power and was fun to drive-it would pull an 8ft quacker like it wasn't there. It had a New Idea loader on it also. The first tractor I actually owned myself is a Farmall 656.I'm getting spoiled with all the modern operating convieniences it has!

I drove my fathers 1941 M in low gear (steered it and sat on the seat) when I was 7 picking up hay bales in the field. Custom hay baled in the neighborhood when I was 12 with an H Farmall and a 77 New Holland baler. Still have the 1946 H but lost track of my Dads M after it sold to Nick Merfeld in Dubuque, Iowa in 1980's. Should never let it go. Today is a different deal and a different day. I did get a 1952 M just recently which I am working on.

The first one I drove, and operated solo was my Grandfather's Super C. He is gone now, but we still have the tractor, and its still going.

I don't remember which I got to drive first, the M or the 8N Ford, I think it was the Ford.
I do remember driving one grandfather's 706 for the first time... and then driving the other one's old John Deere B...
First one I owned wasn't an antique. It's a working tractor and unfortunately, it's green. My first Farmall is a 42 model B.
Read down further and you'll see we just bought a 44 B yesterday.

I used to sit in my Grandpa's lap and steer his Super C down to the river for pickniks etc. Now he is gone, but my Dad has the SC and a C of his. They mean alot to me, and I enjoy mowing with the SC. -- Martin

I was running the 1086 summer fallowing when I was about 10 years old, sitting on my brother's lap. That was the first tractor I ran solo also. I would have to say my 2 H's that I just bought in the last month would be my first tractors. There are others that are "mine" but Dad paid for them so technically they are his.

Good choice on your first tractor, can never go wrong with an H or an M.

The first tractor I started by myself was an Allis Chalmers WD. I was 2 or 3 years old. The first tractor I drove was an Allis Chalmers C. The job was driving the C on the hay fork. We have home movies of me raking straw in 1967 when I was 12 with 2 rakes. My dad was combining oats in the same field with a 460 and a 76 combine pulling a flair wagon along beside. My 14 year old sister was driving our 300 Farmall with a IH 45 baler. Thats when farming was fun. What a life we had.

The first tractor I drove was a B Cultivision, plowing corn. Slow but important work. Driving the B pulling the rope on the fork when putting up hay bales was a little more fun. But the first real job, where other workers depended on your skill, was driving the M pulling a skid to pick up bales of hay. Couldn't really operate the clutch on the M but the H didn't have enough to pull the skid loaded with 80 bales on a hill. Sometimes the panic maneuver was kicking in the switch to kill the tractor. My wife now sometimes does that! Left the farm, college, joined the Navy flew from carriers ( a lot faster than that B Farmall - more adrenaline involved) retired, bought a 49 M to work 10 acres, added SMTA, Dad's last tractor- restored 47 M, and an H (money pit!)yesterday found a 300!
