My 706 was running fine. I shut it off for about 2 hours, when i restarted the tractor it will idle but if you try to give it gas it will spit and spudder and black smoke will come out of the muffler. I cleaned the sediment bowl, checked the screen in the gas line, cleaned the hole out in the gas cap, cleaned all the spark plugs. Any suggestions? Thanks

Sound like the engine is choking for air. A couple quick possibilities: 1 - The choke is partially closed, and 2 - Something has plugged the air cleaner.

Pull the air inlet hose off the carburetor and check the choke plate - it should be wide open when the choke knob is pushed in. Then with the air hose still disconnected start the engine. If it throttles up OK now there's a restriction somewhere in the air cleaner.

Is the choke closed? How long since the air filter was serviced? If that carb has that electric fuel shut off solenoid, That might be the problem.

I checked the air filter and it looked clean but i will take it loose from the carb and try that. It has the solenoid on the carb but it hasn't been hooked up in years.
