Low ash oil is what is used in propane burnin irrigation engines.

NO! NO! NO! NEVER use a multi weight oil in any IH gasoline powered engine. IH engineered these engines to use ONLY STRIAGHT WEIGHT (30W in summer 10W in winter) OIL. The owners books refer to this, as do the current oil reccomendation from the OEM. These engines do not have the tolerences engineered in them for the use of multi weight oils. Multi weight oils will eventually ruin the engine. IH Gasoline engines preform their best with a low sulfated ash oil. LOW ASH oil sold by IH is what you should use for maximum protection.

We have used Valvoline 10w30 in our 46 M working tractor, though not so much work for last few years. Been 20 years since first got it and rebuilt engine and there hasn't seem to have been any ill effects on it yet. Regular oil and filter changes over the 20 years has helped more than type of oil I think. Straight or multi, doubt it makes much differance.

What tolerances are you referring to? If the engine has lots of oil pressure, obviously the mains and rod bearings are getting enough oil.
The valve train isn't exactly high-precision stuff, either.

An engine is an engine - car, tractor, etc. Tractor engines are understressed (low hp/cubic inch) and run cooler than car engines. Any current oil, multiweight or not, is vastly superior to what was originally put in those engines in the 40s and 50s.

I'd like to know what is magically different about IH engines. (?) I'd rather not start a multiweight/straight-weight oil war, though.

We have a cub low boy and an H. The cub tractor required "low ash" oil per the mfgr and dealer. On our H we have used over the years multi weight oil. We figured the tolerances were loose enough to allow for multi weight. However low ash is a good way to go because it will drastically reduce carbon build up in the engine. Same effect for 2 cycle engines.

The only thing "magical" about IH Low Ash oil is the additives. All of the "multi wieght" oils don't have the same formulation of additives that IH Low Ash has.

IH engineering(not Quaker State, Shell or some other oil co) tested IH engines with both the Brand X and IH Low Ash oil in them. Using IH Low Ash oil, it was noted that the engines burned cleaner and had fewer valve deposits and valve torching(due to the lower sulfated ash content of the IH oil) than Brand X. The Brand X oils don't have the lower ash content that IH Low Ash has.....DUH!!!!! So....Buy what ever you want. It all goes back to the OEM vs Brand X debate. Either stick with what the OEM recommends or pay later. Yes oil is oil, its the ADDITIVES that make the difference, not the price or Brand name.

Viscosity Oil makes the IH Low Ash oil, along with #1 diesel oil, and Hy Tran Plus. Thier oils are not sold at the local X-Mart or Wally World either, only at IH dealers.

I have been using 10-30 in my 300 since I overhauled it in 1976. If there is problems with multi visc. oils I think it would have shown up by now.

Our Super M has had a sickning variety of oils in it since my Great Uncle bought it in '60.
I personally know about 10-40, 10-30, 5-30(late fall), 10w, 30w, 40w, and ATF(a mistake, but apparently not fatal)
This tractor isn't worked too hard, but hard enough during mowing season when we push through hood high grass with a 6ft mower.
It runs really well, with no smoke and doesn't burn or leak any oil.

All the ATF does is lower your oil pressure but does a heck of a job cleaning out the block.

Don't forget using ATF also lowers the "available funds balance" in your wallet before it lowers your oil pressure...
