IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO ADD TO THIS...PLEASE DO SO!!!

I don't know about the rest of you folks. But I have noticed that there are people that are putting follow-ups to peoples messages. And they don't even have 1/2 an idea on how to correct the problem. Am I right? I believe so!!

To all you "Know it Alls" People that put a question on these boards have ligitement questions. Regardless of how "ignorant" they may seem. And I have to admit too...I was there once myself. But don't put reply messages to these questions of you don't know what in the hell you're talkin about. Sometimes your suggestions make you sound dumber in the head than a hog is in the ass!

Those folks have enough to worry about and fix without trying your method...which could end up costing them money they don't need to spend. I know I wouldnt appreciate it. Would you??

Now to the rest of you fellas. The guys that DO know what they ARE talking about...THANKS. There have been times I have needed a question answered or a little advice on a problem. And what a help you all have been. Keep up the good advice!!!

Hey #1 you need to take a vacation. #2, I think most of those people are probably trying to help. #3,I have brought more tractors to life that were dead than carter has liver pills , and I still don't know everything, and the best advice I can give you or any one who wants to fix an old tractor is {YOU JUST HAVE TO BE SMARTER THAN THE TRACTOR!!!!}

First, was there a specific incident that is generating this kind of comment? If so, what was it? Second, since you recognize there are some wrong answers out there maybe you could help by posting some corrections so everyone would benefit. I would see this as a real plus to all.

While I really don't agree with your tone I do agree with you and the folks who admit that occasionally some less than perfect advice gets passed around here. I've done it a time or two myself. HOWEVER, I'd like to think that the amount of good information I've put out exceeds the poor and with that I've redeemed myself.
One thing that does kind of steam me though is when six or seven people post the same answer to the same question. Sometimes it seems like they do it just to have something to say.
My suggestion is to read all of the replies to a thread before you post to it. This way we avoid clutter and tie up less space on the server. Which I think is something that Kim would appreciate.

Some advise is good and some is bad. Do all lawyers give good advise?

I couldn't disagree with you more. Sure there are occasional responses that might be a different technique. And occasionaly a response is not correct. BUT WE ARE HUMAN! I think this site is ABSOLUTELY GREAT! As much as I have horsed with Hs, I still pick up interesting tips.

This beats the pre-internet days when you couldn't get information in a timely matter while working on your tractor. Relying on a farm neighbor only usually spelled trouble for me. I would end up breaking something worse than what it was. Like the time my neighbor said, "sure you can pull that bull cage straight out". Uh huh.

Try ATIS. You will find that not every response is correct over there also.

Nuff said.

I could not have said it better. Here I was in the middle of the Northern Neck, VA with a tractor I had never worked on wondering who in the world I could talk to about the PTO grind I was experiencing. While I never got a response on my PTO question, the opportunity was there unlike many years ago. I'd be stuck but good if it were not for BB's like this. The advice might be chancy, but at least it's there.

Al what I really find interesting is Kim's classifieds. It has really nationalized parts. When I put out a WTB for another H radiator, I had 12 replies. Prices from $50-$175 in various conditions. Had 6 replies on the long PTO shield. Got a dandy, including shipping for $50. One individual wanted $100 plus shipping!

As I said in my article, I would have parted that H if it wasn't for the fact I felt I could get anything and everything for that project. Uhhhh, credit cards haven't recovered. Oh well!

I agree! For the price we pay for this advice, it should all be completely accurate and useful, even if the advice is in response to a vague description of a problem. After all, not everyone has mechanical ability and common sense to weed out the bad info.

Uh, what's that? The advice is free? Never mind...

I somewhat disagree with the comment, and definately with the tone. As I have purchased my first diesel truck (Dodge 3500) and have begun frequenting a similar board on the diesel subject, each post brings 2-3 ideas on the same subject, just as this one does.

My premise is this, different responses are not a bad thing and if you own one of these tractors without some basic mechanical ability, then the quality of the responses is the least of your problems. Anyone with a resonable amount of ability should be able differentiate between junk and quality, and mistakes merely make you wiser. I've never worked on a tractor before (race cars are my specialty), so I'm a bit unsure and open to a wide range of solution ideas. I'll weed out the misleading stuff.

I agree with the message you are trying to convey, but absolutely not with the tone. There are a lot of newbies here that are enthusiastic as can be with their newfound tractor and knowledge about it. Dealing with them is just the same as dealing with children on any subject. Much better to encourage participation than to shut them off because they aren't as knowledgable as the old farts.

My advice is to relax and put up with it. Maybe use one of those telescopes to see if there are tractors on other planets. :-)

My two cents worth: If little upset don't like what he getting on the board for advice stay off the board... I think we are all trying to help. I agree with Paul, I know I'm still learning. I find myself giving what I thought was good advice and then have some one correct me. I want to thank them too, can't be right all the time.

I debated some over whether to dignify this with a response.

After some thought, I'd say that one of the benefits of this board is that you get a wide variety of responses to most any question, which gives you the opportunity to look at things in a new light.

You're right (though perhaps a bit too belligerent about it) that some responses are less than helpful, and one or two are borderline dangerous. It is the responsibility of the reader to decide which are useful and which are not.

Usually, when someone posts incorrect information, or less than well-thought-out ideas, someone else jumps in to correct the situation. In my early days as a lurker/contributor to this and other YT boards, I put out some bum dope myself. I've since made a better effort to keep my yap shut unless I'm pretty sure I know what I'm talking about. Still get corrected on occasion, but hey, that's part of learning.

I guess what I'm saying is that I think the benefits of a free and reasonably polite exchange of ideas outweighs the risk of an occasional bum steer.

(Okay, okay, so I put in a nickle's worth...)

I find that the largest percentage of the time, people are giving the best response they know. I too believe that it is the reader's responsibility to decide what information is useful to them. I agree with your analysis Paul.
