I thought i had carb problems this morning, but i just converted m to 12 volts using hitachi alt. ole tractor would not run it would crank and hit. i held the starter button a little longer than needed and it would run. so theres my problem, could it be a starter switch or my novice wiring?if anyone has a diagram using hitachi alt or any other suggestions they would be welcome. thanks brad

An alternator will not keep it from starting unless it is dead shorted and smoking. There are many things which can cause the starting problem. Points that need cleaning/setting, a poor coil. Old fuel, And others. Look in the archives for Hitachi Wiring diagram. The link below will get most of it operational. JimN

Is it possible that you have your wires on the wrong side of the starter switch. Been there done that. Wire going to start will be the only wire on that post on switch.

That is possible, the main supply wire needs to be on the battery side of the big starter switch. If on the other side it will get power only when the starter is turning. If the lights do not work now, that may be it. Or if the amp gauge does not show a discharge when the ignition button is pulled to on but not running. Good call. JimN

Are you using a ballast resistor between the ignition switch and the coil? If you are your ballast resistor probably needs replacing. Hal

I would focus less on the alternator and more on the 12v ignition conversion. Did you switch the coil leads so that hot is to plus and distributor is to minus terminal? (assuming you were positive ground before). Are you getting a healthy spark? This is the time of year where caps and rotors die because of condensation in my neck of the woods. Is your starter cranking well? When I installed my Hitachi, nothing was right until I rebuilt my starter because I had fried a brush connection trying to start it with a poor charge. Now it (my 1966 140)fires up like a champ since 2005 when I put it in.

Wiring is big post of Hitachi to Load side of ammeter (away from battery) and to outer smaller terminal on alternator. Inside (i.e. closer to center) small terminal goes through light/resistor/diode to key switch (coil side, not battery side). Same as BobM's #5 diagram, you just need to know that the outside little terminal on the Hitachi is equivalent to Delco #2 and inside to #1.I recommend a NAPA idiot light TGA 10 made by Echlin--looks right, works great, and just needs a 5/8" hole to live in.

hey guys. It was my main power wire. i had it hooked up to the starter side instead of the bat side. cranked right up. thanks for the help. Brad archie
