I'm in the process of converting my 42 H to a 12 volt system. She will probably never be a show tractor, what with the cracked & welded block (that was done before I got her & was painted over.). Anyway back to the point, when I try to get a 12 volt coil the kid behind the counter always says,"duh what kind of car is that?". Does anyone know the make & model of car that would be the best to ask for? ie "I need a coil for a 78 lincoln clown car without ac" or something like that

Thanks Weekend

I think all you need is a ballast resistor to put between the (+) on the old coil and the "dead side of the switch terminal." This is if you have the alternator and voltage regulator, if needed, and know how to install it. The ballast resistor is made of ceramic, about 2-3 inches long, and has a "fuse-like" coiled contact inside it. It shouldn't be much, and you probably don't need a new coil if the old one is ok. RKS

You should be able to ask for a universal 12 volt coil without an internal resistor with screw terminals. the Standard ignition number is a UC12 as best as I remember.or a coil from a 1957 Chevrolet 283 cu in should be the same. Good luck, Mike

In Indianapolis there is a generator shop that specializes in the antique Delco Remy settups. I got the 12 volt generator and mounted voltage regulator for around $125 a few years back. Looks exactly like the 6 volt. Then I added a resistor into the coil line and used the existing 6 volt coil system. Works great. Cannot give you a car equivalent but I will be purchasing again in a couple of weeks. I will see how he cross references.
