Finally got the MD

After weeks of delay, the '48 MD is sitting in my barn. The gas side is non functioning, so we pull started it and it fired off after about 20 feet.
Runs surprisingly good...no smoke except white right before startup and black smoke under load. I want to change all the fluids, question is what weight should they be? I'm thinking Shell rotella 15-40 for crankcase and injection pump, but what about air cleaner? a lighter weight oil?
I'm excited about this tractor especially as it turned out better than I expected. It doesn't quite fit with the rest of my collection (all F Series) but I only had to haul it 7 miles. Any help appreciated on the oil question.

How do you shut it down on the diesel side? Put it in road gear and stall it out?!? You are the first person I have ever heard say to do that. I think I will try my laser heat gun on it sometime I have it running.

If you get a chance shoot me an email. I have some questions on crankcase oil dilution and rebuilding injectors.

Good for you. I just picked up an MD also. 1949 with a Duall loader single front wheel like new tires all the way around. Also has 3 point hitch and more hyds than I have ever seen on any M or Md. I am going to post pics and hope somebody can id some of the things on this tractor. Good luck with the ole gal.

Well as for what i would be running in her would be I H # 1 diesel oil in a straight 30 weight . As for the pump same there But you will probably find that the seal is out on the transfer pump and it will leak Fuel into the pump. Common problem .As to why the gas side is not working Well start with a good tune up with the proper spark plugs , They won't be cheap. Next the switch over switch then the carb as the needle valve may be sticking and trying to find a kit for it will be like looking for HEN"S TEETH . Always allow it a good warm up on the gas side before switching to the diesel side . Always make sure that the little gas tank has gas in it , never stall it in the field and not be able to restart Fast when HOT . Allow a long cool down before shut down and ALWAYS SHUT DOWN ON THE DIESEL SIDE NEVER switch back over to the gas side as this will raise the combustion temps . You can work them all day long hard but like and old work horse they need to cool way down at just above and idle till the temp gauge reads COLD on the bottom end of the gauge. I have ran many of the old gas start I H's over the years in tractors and Industrial equipment and this is the way i was taught . It served me well when i owned a 450 D and that old tractor is still going and is not far from me .

OEM has carb kits for the F8 carb. Not cheap.
