I need a tractor to mow approx. 40 acres of fescue. There is a M and a Super A available locally each about $2500. Which is the best for this job?

Well, what are you doing? I mow about 60 acres of hay each year with my A and a JD No 5 mower with a seven foot cutter bar. No problem. If you are just bushhogging it, why not go with the M, which is a lot more tractor. Just curious--why mow a forty acre patch? Clipping pasture?

The Super-A has an offset PTO, which makes it harder to hook up a rotary mower. If you put a 3-pt conversion on it, the link that picks up the left arm may get in the way of the PTO. Also, the PTO shaft will have some pretty sharp bends in it. I use a 4 foot tow-behind. It works pretty good. I think a 5 footer would be pushing it in tall grass, and anything bigger would really be pushing it. A sickle bar mower, or a belly mower made for the A, would get around all this if you can find one.

40 acres is a lot. I would go with the M

Robert, The M, no contest. Been there, done that. The job will take about half the time on the M that it'll take using the A with the same mower. The M has 34.44HP to the Super A's 17.35 (Both are stock drawbar figures). You can use a 5ft. to 7 ft. mower on the M in the heavy stuff and you'd be pushing the Super A with a 5 ft. mower in anything over medium stuff, so you'll have to cut more often with the Super A too.
