I just got a 1950 Farmall "M". It doesn't run too bad but today when I pulled it into the shed I noticed that on each missfire it was shooting flames out through the muffler. Been too busy at work to mess with it very much, but was wondering aside from plugs and timing what should I be looking for as the culpret? PS only had her home now for three days ..

Rob you need to set your valve clearances. Sounds like an exhaust valve is not closing or the valve and valve seat are shot. I set mine at .20 when they are cold. Manual will mention .17 when warm. Just make sure you get each cylinder up on compression to adjust correctly.

The Red is probably right about valve lash. But before you pull off the rocker box and mess with the valves, check the distributor point gap (should be 0.020) and ign timing. Too small point gap and/or late timing can cause misfiring and flames in the exhaust - and it's easy to correct.
