I am a little confused about the Super C and the C. My dad has a Super Cwith hyd. and fast hitch. He also has a C with hyd in front of the steering wheel (none in the back) and just a hitch in the back. I thought that hyd. was what made a Super. I then found out that later C's where availabe with hyd. I then read thaat some Supers came without fast hitch. So I guess the differeence then is just the added HP? Help me please! -- Martin

Martin: Years ago there was a standard joke about buying a car. The basic car had a price. OK? Then if you wanted a steering wheel,it was extra cost. Tires..oh, that was extra cost. An engine was extra cost..get the idea? That was carried over to tractors as well. The C in 1948 replaced the B and BN. So to keep the advertized cost down it was made as a "basic" tractor. The B didn't have hydraulics so don't price the C with it either.. etc. So ya end up having some with extras and others NOT. As time when on, more and more extras were then included as Basic and always included in advertized price as "standard.". IHC also had made minor changes fairly often to tractors WITHOUT making a model change. The tourque tube on earlier C's wes lighter..etc. That changed and who cares.. Keep changing a few things now and then to improve the basic model. 50 years later it will take a dedicated person like Guy Fay to sort all this out and write some good referance books. How many really care that 1st gear in early C's was faster. They slowed it down for the SC. The distributer advance was sightly changed for the super (as I remember) but who cares for general work? Just look at major items. Disk brakes and 113-123 cubes? ALL of them are great..how's that 4 a summary(grin) Enjoy'em all.. ralph

Thanks to all, My dad just got a C in addition to his Super C and I am just trying to make a few comparisons. The C does not have fast hitch and I would like to get a finishing mower on it for not a lot of work or money. Maybe a 3 point hitch, not sure yet. Thanks again -- Martin

As cussed and discussed earlier there are several "subtle" differences. I think someone also mentioned a different steering wheel. I think the Super might have had a larger diameter steering wheel. As shown in the pic I posted, the grille, although very similar is in fact taller and will not interchange without some fabrication or cobbling up. Disk brakes, larger C123 engine, larger radiator, water pump, and different pedals as well. However, some late C's had the 123 engine, and water pump I am told. All C's I have seen as well had hydraulics even the earliest ones. Fast hitch was an option on the Super, and can be retrofitted to the C (wish mine had one).

Maybe the confusion is about what we're calling hydraulics. The most basic setup was just the TouchControl, which was just the rockshafts under the tank and were operated with the two levers mounted at the very top of the pedestal, in front fo the wheel. These could be used to operate all kinds of things including the fast hitch, but the only hydraulic cylinders involved were the two that were built right into the TC block (short stroke and the pistons hidden inside two leather sleeves). THEN, there was the "remote control" hydraulic option, which required a modified manifold where it bolts onto the TC block. The modification let you run hoses to a control valve mounted on the light bar, that could then be run back to a more conventional (at least from today's perspective) hydraulic cylinder that could be attached to about anything it would fit, to raise and lower implements. Touch Control was hydraulic (only because it wasn't pneumatic) so the term is technically correct, but it is just primitive enough that some folks might not recognize it as such. Hope I haven't confused the question even more! Scotty

John in MD has a good list. All the C's I have seen had hydraulics. Not all Super C's had Fast Hitch. The one I owned back in the '70's for instance, did not.

Super C's had more Horsepower, a water pump, and disk brakes and a larger radiator. This made the hood set up higher, and thus a different grill. The super also had curved pedals as a regular had straight. I am probably leaving out a few things...

OK, all C's and Super C's had hyd. and the fast hitch was an option only on the Super C. Is this right??? I know there are many other differences as well, just trying to figure this out right now (one step at a time for someone like me). I think I've got it. THANKS ALOT -- Martin
