I am completely restoring a 1948 Farmall M. It appears that I am going to need quite a few shaft seals as most of the existing ones are leaking. The seals that I know I will be needing so far are for the clutch/brake shaft, the shafts that support the band brake drums, the transmission input shaft and the power lift input and output shafts. Also, I may have to replace the rear axle seals and the PTO seal. Does anyone have any ideas as to where I may be able to locate these?

There's no seal on the clutch cross shaft. The fact theres grease there is just an indication the prior owner greased it occasionally.

I think the is talking about the seals on the clutch and brake pedal shaft. There are seals on that because it goes through the transmission. I think you are refering to the the clutch release shaft which as grease fittings on both sides of the clutch housing and is a foot or two in front of the pedal shaft.

Give Ken Updike a call at Carter & Gruenewald. He will have all of them and will mail out via USPS priority mail. I recommend two bull cage seals per side. Those are the seals that the brake drums fit into. Also i usually install double seals on the pto shaft.

Thanks for the info. How do you get two seals to fit? Are the new seals thinner than the originals?

Both the original bull cage and PTO seals were actually 2 seals built into one assembly. The original bull cage seal assembly was about 1 inch thick. The new seals are only around 3/8" thick as Dave mentioned. Same for the PTO shaft seal.

I have bought seals at Napa, Case IH dealership, and a place that speciallizes in bearings and seals. This place was usually alot cheaper than Napa. If you can get the number off the seal, it can be cross ref'd to any number of mfg'r. The seals you get today are about 3/8 thick, where the originals were a combination felt and rubber seal.. The thickness doesn't matter. If your shaft is worn, you can place the seal in an area with no wear.
