Water in My Oil ?

I checked my oil on my 42 A the other day opening the lower petcock and noticed that the oil seemed to have some emulsified water oil mixture. Antifreeze is OK and appears to be clean. My day time temps in the 30 Deg range dropping to teens at night. Other than plowing snow which we havnt had any this year and parking in the front yard as a lawn ornament tractor does not get much use.
Could I be getting moisture in the crankase from short runs from garage to front yard without proper warmup? Presently using 30 wt non det oil and NAPA 1125 filter. Any thoughts appreciated.

Scotty,If you want to know how much water is in your oil,Find a see through container drain your oil in it let it set for 8 hrs and all the water will be at the bottom of the container. If you can't find that type of container just drain the oil ,let it stand 8hrs and then pour it in another pail but go slow at the end because the water will be last, just stop when you see it.You will most always see condinsation in the oil fill spout if you just putter around with those H M MDect..It's good to use 20w oil in the colder months but I would'nt chang the type or brand of oil it might bring you unwanted problems.Good Luck Will

Condensation is certainly a possibility but I would guess that rainwater is getting in engine while it is setting in front yard being a lawn ornament.

Yes condensasion can cause alot of water build up in engine if not warmed up regularly.
I would not change to detergent oil in an old engine that you do not change oil more often, you said it had not been changed since last year.
If engine has not had detergent oil in it and is old and worn, detergent oil could loosen old crud and ruin engine.

And get Detergent oil in that engine! Most of those old engines had detergent oil used in them. Only thing I use non-detergent oil in is low speed bushings on household appliances.

I'll second that. Get rid of that non detergent oil. I use non detergent oil in the lift all of my MD, but that's it. And by the way, I have an original Owners manual for the MD, printed in 1949. It has a supplemental insert in it that is part of the original printing that says to use the new HD Detergent Oils.

It wouldn't hurt to run 10 wt oil in the colder months Winter has funny effects on tractors!

Scotty - Short runs in cold weather will result in rapid accumulation of condensation in the oil - that's probably what you are seeing. Solutions are to occasionally run the engine under load long enough (30+ minutes) to get the oil good and hot, or else change the oil more frequently. Incidentally I highly recommend a winter front to cover the radiator in cold weather to help hasten engine warmup.
