hi folks, happy holidays to everyone. this is only my second post, my first post, as some of you may remember is, "fallen in love with a Farmall H". i had a lot of good responses to that one, i'm hoping for the same luck this time around. here's my question, please forgive me if they seem elementary.
i've spotted a Farmall at a used equip dealer not too far from my home. question, how can i tell an "h" from an "m". what makes a farmall a "super"?
the tractor in question looks a little rough as far as the paint, but i've never seen an "h" in real life. (everyone around here has a J.D.). so, to sum up my ?, what are some "dead give aways" to identify an "H"?
thanks to all that read this. i'm still learning, and visiting this website hoping to learn more. happy new year to all!
bill

An "H" will have the battery on the left side of the tractor, just to the rear of the bell housing; an "M" has the battery directly under the rear of the gas tank.
Supers usually had the battery under the seat.

If you are trying to identify the model from a distance, the H steering wheel and shaft is set at a much higher angle than The M. The M steering shaft follows the top of the fuel tank much closer at the rear and is very noticeabe if you are looking at one from the road.

If you could get entire serial# including the letters before the numbers alot of people on here will be of help. Example: my H is #FBH286125. The serial # plate will be on the left side of the clutch housing. There are differences that can be seen visually but with your lack of knowledge I don't want to confuse you. Good Luck.

One sure way is to look at serial number plate, if it has one.
A H will say, H.
A Super H will say, SH.
A M will say, M.
A M will be taller.
Now, someone will say that all Super H's have disk brakes. This is incorrect.
I'am sure others will chime in to help you with other things to look for like engine size and such.
Good Luck. J

ALL SUPER H's did have disc brakes.... and had the C164 engines. I thought it had been discussed here that even some late H's were made with IHC disc brakes, not the aftermarket Lambert's or ???. I thought Guy Fay's book, Letter Series Restoration Guide, pretty well described all the differences.

My 1953 Super -H- S.N.SH9961J does not have disc breaks. This tractor is original from the factory and the battery is located under the gas tank. I believe that 1954 Super H --Farmalls had disc brakes and battery under the seat.

Serial # prefix for an H is FBH, for an M it is FBK. Don't remember why it is not "FBM". The M is much larger than the H. If you are looking up close -- because of its size the M has curved clutch and brake pedals, the H has straight pedals.

Bill, another way to tell an M from an H is to hook up a 3-14 (or 16") plow in farly heavy clay soil, if the tractor walks off with the plow in 2nd or 3rd gear it is surely an M. The H or Super will work real hard to move the plow. Under the same conditions. :>)

Dick, I would have been inclined to agree with you- until I saw a guy at Penfield, IL pull 3 14's (trailer plow) with a Super H in third gear, and he was plowing alfalfa sod. That was at an IH old tractor show and I was surprised at how well that tractor handled the load.

Don H. I would have been impressed with a SH and 3-14's in alfalfa sod. Do you suppose the fella had "improved" the SH motor? I remember when my dad replaced our H with a Super, there was an improvementin power but still way behind the oldest M we had. Wish I had 'em all today. Dick
