The manual says the engine oil pump has a pressure relief set at 50 to 60 psi. Thus any pressure around 50 psi would be normal. In practice, these old engines will run for a long time with less oil pressure than that.

Dann: Ya said fast idle but I'll add that many posts in the past have mentioned low pressure at slow idle and no real trouble. It can be OK with a wide range of pressure. The oil pump can warp and loose some of it. Check archives 4 more. R.

Most IH engines of that era run a high oil pressure. I always achieve 68-72 psi of oil pressure at rated speed, after a rebuild. If I remember right, the nominal pressure listed in the service manuals is, or is around 68 psi.

The C-123 in my 100 will run 45psi oil pressure when cold and less when hot; however, it has a multigrade oil in it that I haven't changed out yet.

I have a IH 340 with a C-135 engine, almost the same engine but a bit bigger. There is a pressure relief valve which limits the maximum pressure. Mine is 45 PSI, which is what the oil pressure stays at when hot. ( now that I rebuilt the engine.) Before it barely made 10 PSI at 1800 RPM when hot. When hot at low idle it will drop to 20 or so.

If your oil pressure is low, the solution is not to fool yourself by putting in a heavier weight oil.

It runs 10-15psi at idle when hot and about 20psi at higher RPMs. I don't know what weight of oil is in it, other than it is multigrade(one of my uncles did the last oil change). I'm going to put straight 30-weight in it per the manual and see how the pressure is affected.
