Just got a pump last night to put on my "M". It's an "M & W" that goes where the casting is by the distributer. It looks ok, but should it be rebuilt before installing? Are there any quick checks to make? Thanks.

The only thing you can check is backlash in the gears, seal and bearings, I would put it on and see how it preforms. You must add a relief valve in the system or you can break the camshaft off the front of motor. Also if you have a M and not a Super M you will probably have to rework front cover and plate or replace them with Super M so pump will bolt up. There are a few late M's with the later front that won't require change.

The M&W pump is a more universal fit type and doesn't have the year limitations you speak of for the late model IH pump. I second the relief valve though, heard alot about people breaking cam gears by loading the pump; or just buy and install a heavier cam gear from a later SM-450.
