I just priced a power streering system for my 300U. Bates Corp qouted $1250. I don't think I can swing that just now. I have doing this for 12 years. I have seen a big jump in prices in the last five. This was for a used system (obviously ) . It sure would be nice.... irv

What do you want to know? If you are putting the factory power steering on it, you need to get the steering gearbox, of course. You will also need the regulator/safety valve from a P/S model, as it has the flow control valve in it to direct hydraulic priority to the steering. You will also need a couple hoses to hook it up, a handful of gaskets and O-rings, and lest we forget, the steering wheel nut on the P/S model has a "power steering" emblem on it, or so I hear. I don't have the original nut on mine.

I knew that my "new" 300U with regular steering and a front-end loader was going to be hard to steer so I fabricated my own power steering. Most of the parts came from Northern Tools (CharLynn steering valve, hoses, fittings, etc), Burden Surplus (steering wheel, column and associated parts) and Groban Supply (two 8" stroke double acting rams)Finally, I bought tie rod ends from NAPA. I removed the original steering assembly including the drag link arms. I fabricated a new gas tank and steering valve support. I built brackets to hold the steering rams and attached them on both sides of the clutch housing. I tapped into the hydraulics at the spool valves(I used an additional pressure relief) and ran my return line thru a hydraulic filter and back to the return line to the stock IH pump. It works great but it is kind of ugly with all the hoses. I guess I just won't enter it in any shows! But at least my arms feel better after working all day with the loader. I understand that the original power steering units are very scarce and in great demand. I also enjoy fabricating things but this project wasn't cheap, parts ran about $400.

I think somebody posted something about a custom power steering on this board some time ago. I don't recall any details. I wasn't interested in it at the time as I have factory P/S. Best I can recall is that it was nothing like the Char-lynn units used on Farmalls. Maybe they adapted a P/S unit from a combine?
