Sorry but I have to rant a little here. I've been searching for a Super M lately in Minnesota. No problem finding these tractors around, just the prices are really unrealistic(city slickers). I just talked to a feller today who had a super M on the lot in hurting shape(runs, poor paint, beat up sheet metal. The guys want's $3250... I tried not to laugh. I spied another M at the local bobcat dealer, which was priced at $1850, and needed a new tires all around and a valve job. I know these prices are crazy, I can get those same tractors at the local IH dealer in brand new paint and working order for $2000. I'm looking for a restoration project under $800. I guess I'll have to look a lot harder and farther away from the large cities...Time to head to North Dakota where the tractor prices match the condition of the tractor. Thanks for listening....

Thanks for the comments. I'm not trying to find the cheapest tractor, I'm just trying to find a fair price. I got burned going cheap the last time, so I'm not going to make that mistake again..

The best way to get something for the price that you want to pay is to walk away.

You can complain all you want about what things cost when you are buying but do you offer a refund or try not to get what the market will bear when you are the seller? Sorry- just look at it from the sellers shoes too.

Super M's are getting higher and higher in price all the time. It wasnt all that long ago that is was hard to find one for over 1500.00. I recently bought another and paid the most I ever have and was glad to get it. Dont get too caught up in buting the cheapest tractor you can find. Often when you do, they will end up being your most expensive one.

Don't get discouraged. Patience paid off for me. I was looking for a "H" for almost 2 yrs. Lots of auctions, ads etc. Prices were mostly outragous. Finally found a '48. Brand new tires and probably a $4-500 paint job for $1500. The red bug has bit me and I can't get rid of it. :)

How do you feel about $4300 8n and $4500 9n Fords? I've seen these prices on these tractors in the classifieds in my area. As you stated city slickers wearing shorts, polo shirts and thongs will be pulling rotarie mowers with these tractors.

I very seldom find a deal at a "Dealer" although I passed up a Farmall 240 for a very reasonable price from a dealer, but then I didn't know everything he did either.

I look in the papers, especially those that people can put ads in for free.

The other thing I have done twice is put an ad in the paper in the Machinery/Farm Equipment section. I put a "wanted" ad in there. Both times I got 20-30 calls, mostly from people wanting too much money for too little tractor. A lot of junk to wade through, but both times I found 1 or 2 decent machines for decent prices. One I almost stole.

Best of luck in your search. BB

Dealer's always gonna be higher than private seller because the salesman has to make a commission and the dealership has to make a profit. Nothing wrong with that, those guys gotta support their families and all, but a private seller is just trying to get rid of something he don't need or maybe trying to scrape up enough cash to fix his septic drainfield, etc. Auctions are somewhere in between, as the seller now has to pay the auctioneer and you as a buyer are competing openly against other buyers.

jmyt-47: Ya have to attend the old-tractor public auction at Hutchingson(25SW Mpls) every May or June. I am still kicking myself for passing a nice sm-ta for $2300. I toured the Dakotas Montanna and Wyoming six times this last summer looking for another home and saw quite a few older farmalls in Watertown(East Central) S.Lakota area. In Minn ya have to go to the south and southwest where there are bigger farms. The entire northeast one-half is smaller farms and older Farmalls bring higher $$ as does anything close to the Twin Cities metro area. $3000+ for a SC is not uncommon around the metro suburban area.
They'er out there but just a little farther west or southwest. Anyplace with smaller farms still keep the prices higher because they use'em. good luck.. ralph

I sold an M a couple years ago for $350. The rear tires were weather checked but had good tread yet, and it needed a little bit of work on the tin, but it ran. The only problem was that it would run for about 15 minutes and then boil the water out. I think it may have been a bad head gasket or maybe even just the water pump.

Recently an M with and IH loader on it that ran great and had excellent tin, but needed paint went for $1600 at auction. Around here (SW ND) you can find an M for a little over $500 in running condition. Dealers usually want anywhere from $750 to $2000 for them.
