I have a Farmall 100 (an upgraded A) that I use for mowing. It was losing power and missing periodically.

I changed points, plugs, condensor.

It ran fine with plenty of power for about 2 straight hours ... then started losing power and ran rough.

Checked the carb and gas ... doesn't appear to be any fuel problems.

Could it be the coil? The problem seems to be a lot worse after the engine gets warmed up.

As a relative new comer to antique tractors ... it is great to have such a tremendous resource and wealth of knowledge available!

You guys have given me a whole bunch of ideas ... many things to go check out this weekend.

Appreciate all the help and support!

MY C was doing the same thing. I had done about everything that has been brought up here. A old time Farmall man I met said I should set the valves with the tractor warm and running at idle. I did it with the motor off and then checked it with the cover off while running and was surprised at how off they where. Set them running and it smoothed everything out a lot. It also will idle much slower now and the rain cap just sits there. This may not help your problem but it sure made mine run a lot better and it was easy to do. It will viberate your hands a little trying to adjust moveing valves.

have you checked your compression first place to start new parts wont make good valves

All good suggestions. Try to narrow down gas or ignition. Does it help to reduce throttle or choke? If so, it sounds like gas. If it makes no difference then ignition (coil). My want to remove gas bowl from tank and clean both or get new gas bowl. Loosen gas cap and try it in case the gas cap vent is plugged.

Ok this may sound simple but I ran into the problem you are having but only when I applied the gas. My M ran great at idle...so I replaced the plugs and it still ran like crap. I pulled the fuel line off between the carb and tank. Fuel was just trickling out. I had clogged fuel valve. When I purged the carb there was fuel but there was not enough to run past an idle. Before you go spending money on parts check your tank valve to ensure enough fuel is flowing through the lines.

I know a lot of guys are saying electrical and they could be right but I'd also ask how is your manifold. I did some plowing with my M a couple of weeks ago and it sounded fine when it was cold. When it warmed up it sounded terrible and it turned out my manifold was loose. Its a cheap inspection to see if it has rusted out somewhere or is just loose.

Check the distributer cap. I tuned up my B, with a brand new cap, and about 5 hours of use, it started to miss and no power. One of the electrodes that the rotor passes over started to get buildup, and that cylinder wasn't getting any spark. I filed off the buildup and haven't had any trouble since, but I'm definitely returning the cap for a new one.

It definitely sounds like the coil is the culprit.

I guess the 1000 never came with a mag... but could a coil in the mag do the same thing ?

I agree; it is probably the coil.
