How long should I hold down the button for the glow plugs before starting. Should I continue to hold it while I turn it over?

My 560D manual says at least 30 seconds when above freezing, and at least 90 seconds below freezing. It says to keep the button depressed while starting and until the smoke clears.

Mine will start without them on a hot summer day, and about 20-30 seconds when around 40 degrees. If you look at your watch while doing this you will discover 90 seconds is a long, long time. I had trouble starting last winter until I read to keep it depressed even after it caught - that made all the difference.

I hold my 504 glow plug button down for 30 seconds. If it is cold outside I may need to hold it down while cranking the engine. I also have a block freeze plug type heater that I use and it seems to be the best way to assist starting.

It depends on how cold it is. On older caterpillar macines they have a chart that tells the temp and how long you should hold it for. If it doesent start after you cranked it a couple times, you should quit cranking and hold it longer.

30 seconds seems forever when your fingers are about frozen solid. Why does that button have to push so hard????? ????? ????
