The old Super C is starting to come together now.I have been saving all my tickets on parts but after buying new coil, wires, dist, oil filter, plugs, carb kit and paint today, I threw away my notes on what I am spending. If anyone ever saw it they would put me in a psych ward. I'm haveing fun but no way could I ever recoup what I got in her. Now to my ?. Who ever painted her last painted right over the tags. How is the best way to remove this paint and save the tag under the red paint?

I used a small soft wire wheel that came in my Dremel kit.I thought it did a nice job.

I've had good luck with lacquer thinner. It takes quite a bit of rubbing, but I've been able to take 20 year old red paint off 50 year old serial # tags without damaging the black paint on them. Could depend on what type red paint was used.

You can purchase "AIRCRAFT PAINT STRIPPER" or similar products at most autoparts stores. It will take the paint off. If it also takes the black paint off, remember---you can purchase a NEW tag and have the original number stamped on it. Then it WILL look like new. Just don't deface or damage the original serial numbers.

use the wifes best heat gun on a corner to test. Another idea is to try various solvants on another area and then use the best one to soften the TOP layer. The Smithsonian aviation dept has stripped whole WW2 airplanes LAYER by LAYER in their detailed restoration. Maybe a website with details? Take your TIME or just leave it UNTIL the best method comes up. Once it's ruined it's too late to try another better method on a small area. (not easy to leave it alone) ralph

A lot of us are going to the Psych ward, I think! Don't do what I did to get the paint off the tag. The wire wheel took the black paint right off the tag along with the red that had been painted over.
