Questions on M hydraulics

Hello -

My '46 M has live remote hydraulics courtesy of an M&W pump behind the distributor and a Gresen (Minneapolis) two-position valve (stamped 2701) piped into the original belly reservoir. I've not yet been able to test them, but I'm considering getting a tandem disk and am wondering how things hook up. There are two hoses running to quick-disconnect fittings at the rear of the tractor. Is one a pressure line and one a return? What kind of cylinder should I be looking for to raise the disk? When I pull back on the valve control, the engine lugs; when I push forward, there's no change in engine speed.

Thanks in advance -

Lowell - What you need is an open center, 3-position, 4-way control valve in place of the two position valve you've got now. The 3 valve positions give you "raise-hold-lower" capability for the remote cylinder. You will probably also need to add an auxiliary hydraulic reservoir - the belly pump reservoir will likely be insufficent for what you will be asking it to do.

For the remote cylinder, the stroke will be determined by the distance disc lift mechanism has to move to provide a complete lift of the disc. The cylinder diameter required will determined by the weight of the disc and by the pressure rating of your pump.

Your local C-IH dealer or Central Tractor can help with valve and cylinder selection. Or if neither are nearby, an industrial fluid power (hydraulics) distributor is also good source of guidance and parts.

Dad's got the exact same set-up on His '51 M. You need a double acting cylinder to run the disc. This setup gives You live 2-way hyd. The little Gresen spool valve changes the 2-way to 1-way hyd. I would think there is also a add-on hyd. control valve the hyd. control lever goes to. The belly pump is just used to store oil now, no pump or control valve inside it any more. Hook the cyl. hoses up to the quick connects and switch the position of the Gresen valve and You should be in business. Also check the oil level in the res.
