I put my newly rewired generator on my M yesterday and it starts it up really nice. It was switched to negative ground and 12 volts. The only problem is, i cannot tell whether or not it is charging correctly. i am hoping of course that it is but i think i may have messed up my ampmeter while trying to take the plate it is mounted to off. one of the screws was messed up so i had to saw it off and i got impatient and tried knocking it off with a chisel and hammer. i know now this was a bad idea when i saw the needle stuck in the full discharge position (its there when the tracotor is running or stopped). so what could i do to find out if the generartor is charging correctly without buying a new ampmeter (i am going to do that some day i just want to know something else that would work right now). i polarized the generator and i think everything should be hooked up correctly. thanks for the help!

Your tractor will start nicely wheather it has a generator on it or not (providing the battery is atleast partially charged). It is the stored energy in the battery that does the starting. The generator replaces the energy that has been drained from battery. An M can be started several times and run for several hours on a fully charged 12 volt battery even if the generator isn't charging at all. My M has 12 volt battery without generator hooked up. I charge the battery up with a battery charger and can get by for quite awhile on one battery charging. That is of coarse without using lights and trying to avoid multiple starts. The best way to check if the generator is charging without testing equipment would be to run the tractor for a length of time with the lights on. And maybe doing some multiple start ups over that span of time. Multiple start ups and light useage would be a sure way to put some drain on the battery. Over a span of time you will notice if the battery is losing its charge, which would tell you that the generator is not doing its job. Note that starting tractor and running it all day will not put much of a drain on the battery. It will take more juice to start it than running it all day. I have had dead battery's that wouldn't turn the tractor over, and I hand cranked it up and drove it all day with a distributor. The distributor doesn't put much drain on the battery and doesn't require alot of juice to make the distributor throw a spark. But anyway, thats what I would do for the time being untill you get that amp guage put on.

Jeff, use an accurate voltmeter and measure voltage across the battery with the motor off, it should be about 12.6 volts. Start the motor and run it at about 1/2 throttle, then check battery voltage again, it should be about 13.2 to 14.5 volts if it is charging. If voltage does not increase with the motor running at 1/2 throttle, it's not charging.
