now that i got the pistons figerd out now i was wondering how much should it cost to have the head and valves done worst case in general the sping and retaners look ok but have no idea how much it should cost i dont wont to over pay a shop so if any one has had one done pleas let me know how much to except thanks a lot i think this message board will have my 10-20 running in no time thanks so much for all your help dan
 
The one on my 10-20 was in bad shape. All new valves, had to have seats put in as well and new valve springs across the board. Tanked and cleaned and all work and parts was about $487.oo. I did reuse the old rocker shaft and just turned it upside down so it would run the arms on the side that wasn't worn much. I know it was a lot, but man that thing ran SWEET and many people came up and commented about it was the nicest running 10-20 they ever heard so I guess it was worth it!
 
i have a freind that is the shop teacher in the local high school and has the hot tank and valve grinder do you think we can tackle it or is it a job for a pro he can do car/truck heads never any thing this old

No more complexity than newer ones, but likely a bit bigger and probably heavier too. Also, did you plan on magnafluxing it? Milling? Seat inserts? Not endorsing either route, just noting parts of the equation that you may or may not have in mind for the head job, and he may or may not have the equipment for.

As far as costs, if you ballpark $200 in labor with potentially double that in parts (or very little if the guides aren't shot and the valves are good enough to grind), you can weigh your options.
