Need some advice about the sickness.....

I was passing through the local IH dealer today and saw that they have a nice looking C with a sickle bar mower, along with an M that looks like it has seen better days. Sorry I don't have a year on either one. What would be a good price for the C? Reasonable paint, decent decals, no corrosion, looks complete. I may make an offer on both if the stars align properly and my wife remembers the part about it being a good way for the son to learn about motors and things. The C would be a good size for him, along with an extra way to mow the field, and I just want an M to keep my H company. Makes you think of posts past, huh?

Thanks,

Chris

I know of a dealer in NE OH who has a C with sickle bar mower who is asking $1850.00....I thought that was kinda high. It has been there a while so he may have come down a little.

Probably are looking at the same tractor....still undecided what to do about it, look at this one or wait to see if there is a lower priced one in the future.

Location is everything...in Alabama, the Hs, Ms, and Super Cs all run about the same $1200-1500 ...Super Cs maybe a few hundered more, but nowhere near as low a price as my friends in the midwest pay.

Here Super As and Cubs are king...most people have a few acres of rolling to steep land and the WFE and lower center of gravity keep make the Cubs and Super As popular. Even the lowly As go for up to $1500 for nice ones with belly mowers.

I have found dealers to be impossible to deal with and won't buy from them. My dad does and I think he gets burned every time...BB

Well, an average M isn't worth much more than an average H. An average H in my area is worth around $500. An average M in my area would be around $700 or so. Smaller tractors seem to be worth more (referring to the c and smaller). Why I don't know for sure but I speculate that it is becuase they take up less space when you store them inside and perhaps fewer were made. A friend of mine has an average C and he priced it to me around a $1000 to $1500. I don't know if the offer is out of the ball park (maybe a little high) but I refuse to pay more money for a smaller sized tractor. Why pay $1500 for a C when you can buy 3 H's or 2 M's for the same money. You can get alot more done with a bigger tractor to boot. The only advantage I can see is you can drive a C into an average sized garage door. An H or an M is likely to hit exhaust pipe or steering wheel on the top of door and will take up more space inside your 2 car garage. I sawed the exhaust pipe off of my H so it will fit into an average door. But now I store it in bigger shed. An M would be a little taller and what not. Alot of people get there mind set on smaller tractors or want one of each size and therefore look pretty hard at smaller tractors, while loosing sight of bigger tractors selling cheaper. A C would be maybe more convenient for the boy to work on since the parts would be lighter. As far as turning him loose driving one, if he is old enough, it wouldn't be much more dangerous than having him drive one bigger than a C. I was driving an H and M as soon as my legs were long enough to push the clutch in. Just my 2 cents worth.

One question. At those prices, where are you? That's about half of what we pay in Vermont for the same tractors.

I am in the heart of the U.S. here. North East Kansas. When I say average, I mean average too. Not overhauled but not wore out. Maybe half tread on tires all the way around. Paint would probably be faded and decals questionable. Probably not real complete either referring to fenders, wheel weights, hand crank, and swinging draw bar, ext. Farmers are selling them becuase they have become somewhat obsolete. Other farmers are not buying them. Farmers around here are trying to do alot of upgrading on equipment. They are getting newer and bigger equipment. These old H's and M's are to small, no live clutch or p.t.o or hydualics, and to slow for the farmers to justify using them for hours on end. Maybe shuffling wagons around the yard but not much room for them in the field when farming over 1000 acres which most farmers do around here. A restored H woud be around the $1000 to $1200 range. A restored M would be around $1200 to $1500. That would be original and fairly complete, no three point, narrow front, ext. New paint, new tires, mechanicly sound, new hoses, new belts, ext. What are the prices in your area?

My case of "Farmallitis" took a turn for the worst after seeing the 1929 Regular WFE for sale on Ebay. It's a good thing it is far away from me or I might just be bidding. In the meanwhile, I will just dream about that Regular sitting in the shed with its little brothers F-20 and Super H.

If they both run decent, I would offer them $2,000 for both. Prices will vary greatly, especially sitting on a dealer lot. Don't be surprised if they counter offer at a much higher price.

Thanks Red, and all of the rest of you too. That's sorta what I thought (or was hoping). I may have already been beat to the M, the C could be mine, but they want $1500. Figure I could offset it a little by selling one of the mowers (the trailer I have or the sickle bar on the C), and my son really liked the size of it. Salesman said it had belonged to one of the mechanics who traded it on a Kubota, and both of them ran good, no noises, leaks, etc. Have to wait til tomorrow to see whether or not the other buyer is real. My wife is kinda leaving it up to me, which is dangerous. Salesman also says he can find me an M more in the range of what I was thinking, so maybe I can find 2 that way for less. Am always keeping my eyes open on the road these days.

Anyhow, thanks again!!

Sounds like we where looking at the same tractor and the price has come down. I have since bought a Super C for some of the same reasons you mentioned...something I can use and to have my son learn how to turn a wrench.

Good luck.
