THIS TRACTOR GOES TROUGH A COIL ABOUT EVERY OTHER TIME WE CUT 5 ACRES OF GRASS. I HAVE CHANGED PLUGS, WIRES, POINTS, CONDENSERS. WHAT CAUSES THIS COIL TO KEEP GOING BAD?

Do you have a ballast resistor in line with the 12V going to your coil? If its not there, the coil will overheat.

HEY KENDALL, WERE DID YOU GO?
I AM RE POSTING MY QUESTION FROM 9/11/2001.
YES I HAVE A RESISTOR THAT MOUNTS DIRECTLY ON TO THE ALTERNATOR. HOWEVER ALL THE COILS I HAVE USED ("NAPA" IC14, "STANDARD MOTOR PRODUCTS" UC15 AND "WELLS" LU800) SAY RIGHT ON THE COIL BODY "USE WITHOUT EXTERNAL RESISTOR". ALL OF THESE MANUFACTURES, SAY THAT THESE COILS ARE THE ONES, THEIR CATOLOG CALLS FOR ON A 184 CUB LOWBOY, 12v SYSTEM. COULD THE FACT THAT I HAVE A INLINE RESISTOR WITH A COIL THAT DOES NOT REQUIRE ONE, BE THE PROBLEM WITH THESE COILS HEATING UP AND GOING BAD?

Go to Auto Zone and get a Wells LU800 coil. Sounds like you're using external ballast coils, the above coil is a non-ballast type which is what you need..... Mike

HEY MIKE, WERE DID YOU GO?
I AM RE POSTING MY Re: Re: From 9/10/2001.
THE COIL I AM USING IA A "NAPA" IC14 WHICH CROSS REFERENCES WITH THE "WELLS" LU800. IT SAYS RIGHT ON THE UNIT "USE WITHOUT EXTERNAL RESISTOR". IS THIS WHAT YOU ARE REFERING TO AS A "BALAST"?

IN REPLY TO JON D, THE SYSTEM IS 12 VOLT AND THE COILS I KEEP GOING THROUGH ARE ALSO 12 VOLT COILS.
THE TRACTOR WILL BEGIN TO MISS AND EVENTUALLY DIE.
AFTER IT COOLS DOWN (THE COIL GETS REAL HOT)YOU CAN USALLY RE-START IT, BUT IT MISS FIRES BADLY. OTHER TIMES IT WILL NOT START AT ALL AND I JUST GO TO THE PARTS STORE AND BUY A NEW $20.00 COIL.

I'm not shure, but you may have some other electrical problems.
